We saw the dr today with the intention of getting my son off strattera as he's been on it since June and still can't sit still. So now he's saying to try strattera and ritalin xr at the same time. Anyone ever heard of that?

Yes, quite often people have tried using both Strattera and a stimulant for their child. I suppose the Ritalin XR would be given in the morning, in the hope that it helps with hyperactivity during the day. You have to sort of proceed by trial and error and see what works for a given child. Does you physician like Strattera for some reason? Do you think that it has helped your child at all since June, kendra?

No I don't think the strattera has helped him at all. And I have to say by adding the ritalin xr it was like hyperactive r us around here today, unless you count the times there was constant whining and crying. Any suggestions?

hi kendra, all stimulants made my ds8 more hyper. strattera is often given when stims can't be, but since you said it is not helping, it may be time to look at something else. my son's dr tried various stims before trying a mood stabilizer (he is bipolar/adhd). perhaps your dr would consider another stim? it is such a pain to go through the med trial and error. we did it for 2-1/2 yrs before we got it right. have you had a chance to tell the dr about the increased hyperactivity on the ritalin? please keep us posted. we are here for you.

We did ritalin first and it caused crying, but that was the short acting ritalin. Then we tried Adderall, but that caused anger and meanness that I have never seen from this child. So we went to a non-stim, Strattera, which isn't helping. Now we're doing strattera and Ritalin XR which is really not working. Now I don't know where to go, but I do know that I want to get this child help. This has all been really hard on him and on the rest of us.
