My DD, age 17, just started 50mg Zoloft today for anxiety disorder. It made her a little sick to her stomach and very sleepy. She says she feels very relaxed, tired, and a little disconnected.
Has anyone had a similar experience and how long did it last for??
Thanks.

I have taken Zoloft for most of the last 9 yrs. I am never sleepy. In fact, I have been taking prescription sleeping meds for that long too.
Occasionally, I have an upset feeling if I don't take my meds with water or something to wash them down.
What time of day does she take her meds? That may be a part of it. The med stays in your system for about 26 hours, so it would be okay to adjust the time of day without too much to worry about.
If she doesn't feel better soon, put a call into the doctor, or check with your pharmacist. Maybe she start on 25 mg. (1/2 pill ) for a few days and then bump up from there.

Thanks for the reply. She takes them in the morning. She said the first day was more difficult than today. She actually felt "high" or very relaxed and felt sick off and on throughout the day. Today she is pretty relaxed, her eyes kinda look like she is "high" and she is giggling a lot...in a pretty good mood. She said she feels a little sick but not like yesterday. I told her to only take 25 mg tomorrow and see how it makes her feel. Thanks.

Hi there. I have been on Zoloft for about 4 months. I do remember when I first started that I was very sleepy the first couple of days. I remembering thinking that I would not be able to handle this medication. The medication is suppose to kick in by the 6th week. It has to build up in the system.
However, I gave it a week and I was fine. It's actually a good med and non-addicting. It helps with Serontnin levels. I am doing great on it. I am on a low dosage 50 mg.
My advice is to just hang in there. The sleepiness will go away. Give it a few days.

I was on Zoloft for many years, and it never made me sleepy. I believe my dose was 25 mg, not 50 mg. I would support your DD cutting back to 25 mg to see how she feels. Zoloft was great for anxiety. (I had to discontinue Zoloft because of a *rare* side effect--wouldn't you know I'd get something rare! It began to make me thirsty all the time, and no matter how much water I drank, it made no difference!! This is not worth worrying about for your DD--my doctor said he had never heard of anyone with this reaction!) Good luck with the Zoloft! I'm sure your DD will be feeling better soon!

I got just got off the phone with my dd's med doctor, she sees a therapist for the talking, counseling, diagnosing, etc, then she see's another doc there that specializes in just the med part. He wants to start her on zoloft for her rebound at night and some anxiety. I was a little reluctant to start this, since i cant rememer to take my own meds ;D. I want our evenings to be better as a family, so i'm willing to try. I would like to hear what you guys think. She is 7, almost 8. He wants to start her on the 25mg with her 45mg of concerta. She does pretty good during the day, her teacher has seen real progress on the control. She is an excellent student, in the excelled program, just has a problem with control and being a little too busy, especially if there is a more stimulated atmosphere. Anyway, i'm rambling. I just wanted some opinions on the zoloft. Thanks!

One of my twins (10 yrs old, 75 lbs) takes Zoloft for depression. The prescription called for 25mg but when he took that the first day it was like he was on speed. He was racing all over the house and couldn't stop talking. The 2nd day I didn't give him anything since he was still wired. On day 3, I cut it back to half the dose (12mg) and he was fine. After 10 days I increased it to the full 25mg and he is doing well on it now.
It's funny how everyone reacts a little different. I can't imagine him getting sleepy on it. It was just the opposite for us. He's been taking this for 2 months now. It has been very subtle but we found it to be fast acting and not taking several weeks to see a difference.
