Ok, we are nearly at the end of our rope! DS is 8 and diagnosed with aspergers (high functioning autism) and bipolar subtype (Amen Clinic, August 2004). He was first diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5. We have tried Ritalin, Adderal, chlonodine, celexa, and now Abilify. All with disasterous results! The last was the scarriest by far. He started coughing, then wheezing and throat started to swell. We rushed him to the emergency room and he is fine now. We have tried elimination diets before and didn't see any change but after that experience decided that we should try again. If he is having so many reactions to these drugs there must be a good chance he is also reacting to food. We started a GF/CF diet last week and have seen some progress. I bought the book by Karen DeFelice "Enzymes for Autism and other Neurological Disorders." It is great. I just ordered Houston Enzymes today and hope to see some improvement with them. Does anyone have any ideas for my highly sensitive boy??

oh, how terrifying that abilify experience must have been . i am so glad to hear that daniel is doing well now. my ds8 is dx bipolar/adhd and takes depakote, risperdal and elavil, which (knock wood) seem to be the right combination for him. we had also tried med after med, before finding this combination. bipolar kids really cant take stimulants. we tried stims when my ds only had the adhd dx and it made the negative behaviors worse. has your dr considered lithium or the anti-seizures like depakote?it's hard enough to decide to medicate and then find the right med(s). it has to be so extra hard with his med sensitivity. (((((((((((((DanielsMomNDad)))))))))))))))))))) best of luck to you~ please keep us posted

Hi OHmama, How have you been? Yes, I forgot to mention the trileptal trial. For the first few days it went really great...he seemed more happy and present. But after about a week he started to get really hyper, aggressive and just plain strange. So, once again we stopped that medication and decided to try abilify after the trileptal cleared out of his system.
What a journey!

I thought that was you. Good to hear from you. Yes, the journey sure is long! I'm glad to see you posting, you are like an old friend found again. I tried to email you from the old address I had but it seems your email has changed since last year.
My boy is now taking Depakote and an antipsychotic called Seroquel. The Seroquel is very new and it's too soon to tell if it will work. The Depakote has lost its effectiveness but we are thinking along with the antipsychotic it may calm him enough. Time will tell.
Have you tried any of the other mood stabilizers?

Hi I was reading your post, and saw that your son is trying Seroquel... My sons doctor has just prescribed it for him. We are weaning him off Risperdal (its a scary thought for me) over 4 days, and will start the Seroquel on Tuesday. He has ADD and Tourettes... supposedly the Seroquel will control his difficult behaviour (rages and constant confrontations with us) (hes 10) and the doctor says it will control his tic's, although I have not seen anything that I could find on the web, that indicates that its for tics. How is your son doing on it?

Losing my sanity, I think we are doing good on this med so far. I'm not sure if it's been long enough to say yet but I am hoping this will be the one to make a difference with the mood, anxiety, and many other issues with my boy. We are using a very small dose, 25mg. I was reading about Seroquel being used for tics in the book "Straight Talk About Psychiatric medication for Kids revised edition" (published in 2004) by Dr. Timothy Wilens. There is a whole chapter on the antipsychotics and their use. This book has been the best thing for information on the different uses of medication. Please check out the topic "Seroquel" under the Conventional Medication section of this link.... millermom.proboards23.com There are two pages of information about this med from other parents who are using it and you may want to post there for specific information.

Thanks for the info OHMAMA. There's a wealth of info out there if you just know where to look. Its a relief to know there are others that are having the same experiences Seroquel certainly sounds like it's worth trying. At the moment he's up to 1 mg twice a day of Risperdal and we have to decrease his dosage over the next four days to get him off of it. I hope the transition is not too bad! The doctor is also suggesting he do some sort of cognitive therapy. I dont know much of the details of it yet. take care! ;D

Hi, my oldest dd, 13, has asperger's and she's had a lot of problems with several different meds. I'm not sure if it has something to do with how meds work with an asperger's brain--even allergy and asthma meds can affect her stangely.. I don't know if it is just her--but it seems many things she takes make her aggressive and weird as you described. Two weeks after beginning advair she got very aggitated and mean so we took her off. The doctor recomended we switch to pulmacort instead and we had similar results.
She has been taking zoloft 75 mg for the past year, which has been very helpful in keeping her calm and less anxious. We recently upped her dose (with dr's permission) to 100mg and she started having mild hallucinations. Whew! this is so hard! I have to worry about everything she takes. Anyone else notice these kinds of problems?
