Hi my dd is 6 and on adderall er she has been having hairtwisting twirling problems for awhile now, but now she is actually getting bald on one side of head from it. the dr said it could be from the med. She also a few weeks ago develo[ed a tic . Also from med. Other than these things adderall had been effective for her. The dr. perscribed Clonidine I gave her her fist pill this morn with not any change . Has anyone else used this? SHe is taking 10 mg of adderall down fro m the 15 she was on. lowering the dose has helped a little but not compleatly. she is also very moody. We tried stratteraa and concerta which neither did much for in fact when on concerta the hair twirling started. THanks for input. LIsa

Hi Lisa, if I am understanding correctly, some meds don't show an immediate result (within 24 or so hrs. it takes time for the meds to absorb into the system).....just give it a bit of time, and you may see a result.
Good luck
My daughter has been twirling her hair and I just keep reminding her to stop. She chews on it twirls it, oh she is such a pain.

Lisa,my daughter(6) had a huge bald spot last year while on adderall xr 15 mg.She would twirl her hair in knots and then pull the knots out.One day she pulled a whole handful of hair out.We stopped the adderall and it still continued. She stopped after being on clonidine for about a week.Unfortunately, she still needed something for her ADHD so now she is on 5 mg adderall xr.It helps enough to keep from getting in trouble at school but it's not perfect.I know the hair twirling is a tic from adderall because my neice did the same thing when she was on it.My daughter developed several other tics while on 10 mg adderall xr so we are going to stay with the 5 mgs as long as we can.Good luck!I know how hard it is.I used to cry when I'd look at her bald spot. You are just trying to help your daughter.I would recommed taking her to someone who specializes in ADHD if you're not already.

Thanks brenda, it looks like were in the same boat as you were witht he adderall and hair twisting. You discribed just what my dd does. SHe knots it then pulls. AHHHH . I guess Ill just have to wait the week out and see if in improves. SHe is really at it today. Is your daugher still on adderall and clonidine? Im hoping once the tics go away she might beable to be off the clonidine. j THanks again. LIsa

Is Adderall the only stimuulant that has been tried for her? My daughter developed a throat-clearing tic on Adderall XR, but is now on Ritalin LA with no tics (fingers crossed).

What mg dosage of clonidine is she on? Is it on a sliding scale? Like a small dose for a week, then upping it a bit?
I am fortunate I guess, in the only tic sd has is a growl (vocal), which actually she had way before medication, it just gets worse with medication...

Hi Sarah started on Strattera in January, didnt help. And gave her a cough tic whtich did go away. THen on concerta when the hair twisting started . It didn't help her symptons as much as the addreall did . THe dr. dosn't seem to think changing to ritlin would help the tics??? Don't know cept she said it was in the same family . SHe now is having wetting accidents started twice last week at kindergarten towards the end of day and now a few times at home. I don't know what that is all about. SHe is on 10 mg of adderall down from 15. Could she's not noticing those signs with a lower dose of having to go?? The tics arent any better or worse with the lower dose. THanks for the responses. Lisa

Lisa,I know how hard it is.My daughter had several wetting accidents last year in kindergarten while on 15 mg adderall xr.I never thought it was related to the med but maybe it was.She started the hair twisting so we tried strattera.Did't work at all.Made her real emotional and scared of everything. We then tried concerta.Fine at first but needed to be increased so was raised to 36 mg and a severe blinking tic started.Lowered back down to 18 mg and after a month started the hair twisting again.Added clonidine and it helped the hair twisting but made her too tired and whiney so we changed to concerta and tenex.Helped for 2 weeks before a shoulder and facial tic started. Decided to give strattera another try.Still didn't work and caused a throat clearing tic and smelling fingers tic. Went back to Adderall XR 5 mgs and raised it to 10 mgs after a week.Fine at first but started pulling at clothes and smelling fingers again. Now we are on 5 mgs addrerall xr and the only tic she has is the smelling fingers tic and it's not to noticeable.Looks like she's rubbing her nose.It takes time for the tics to go away after you stop the meds.Clonidine can even make tics worse in a few cases.I weaned my daughter off clonidine a week ago and her tics have actually gotten better.I hope they go away completely. We have been trying to get her meds just "right" for almost 2 years. It's hard when tics are present. My brother has a tic disorder and several of my cousins do also.Does anyone in your family have tics? What kind of dr are you taking her to?Brenda

Brenda, Did clonidine make him sleepy. I gave my dd a dose after school, and she could hardley stay awake at dinner time. THe other days I gave it a little closer to bed time and didn't notice it as much. Ill be calling her am k teacher tommorrow and see if she seems out of it . Hopefully they will be truthful. Sometimes it seems they just are happy the kids not causing problems and doing their work not how the meds might be effecting her personality . No one else in thefamily has any tic disorders. SHe was better today tho the teacher even said she wasn;t twirling her hair . I actually gave her a rubber band for around her wrist to play with. SO that might be helping also. SHe seemed receptive to that. Although something that works one day may not another I found. SOrry to ramble but thanks for your support . Lisa

Lisa,I tried giving it to her 3 times a day but it made her sleepy and then she would be whiney because she was sleepy. They say the sleepiness gets better with time.I decided to just give it at night. How are things going?

Hi Brenda, THe tics are mostly gone now, and she dosn't seem as sleepy . ALthough I think it is helping her get to sleep in the night. Yesterday she was sick after lunch in school. SO I didn't give it to her last night. SHe was better this morning and was ok with breakfast and her adderall and clonidine so hopefully she's over whatever it was. SHe has a rubber band around her wrist that she playes with instead of her hair, which she does use. (the first day she used it at school before they saw my note they took it away thinking she had just picked it up somewhere. ) Thanks for asking. Lisa
