Both Concerta and Adderall cause anxiety in some, but not all, of those who take them.
Has anyone tried them both, and experienced side effects with both?
Is one of them less intense than the other?

My sd became obsessive on concerta... To the point that a piece of paper on the floor would distract her severly, till it was taken care of...
I dont see that issue with adderall xr, or at least not to the extreme it was before... Sd is still very observent! Which can be a good thing...

My son did much better on the methylphenidate meds than the adderall type. The adderall made him emotional and weepy. The methylphenidate meds help him focus. However, the delivery system of the concerta gave him stomach/headaches. He doesn't have that problem on Medate CD.
As with just about everything ADHD/med wise, each person/kid can react differently.

Douglas -
I have noticed that with the methylphenidates - with those who do well on them - it seems that all of the different "long lasting" ones affect each child very differently - I am thinking it must be a combination between the delivery system and the child's individual metabolism . . .
I have no experience with the adderall.

My daughter had a terrible time with Adderall XR, it made her extremely emotional especially as it started to wear off. It also severely affected her appetite. She is currently on Concerta and she doesn't seem to have any side affects from takin it but it doesn't seem to be lasting as long as it should. Unfortunately I think it just depends on the individual child and it is trial and error to determine which one works best. Best of luck in finding the right one quickly.

DS has been on adderall for most of his 7 years with meds. When he hit puberty, we noticed an increased bout of mood swings, crying, anger, etc. More so than the rest of the boys at the same stage. We tried concerta, and he was just plain mean and angry all the time. Strattera was great for his mood, but did nothing for his attention. We went back to Adderall XR and this year is going great. I guess he outgrew some of the puberty issues, and now he is back on his original med.

My son just switched to Concerta from Adderall last Saturday. We tried the XR formula of Adderall last year, at the beginning of first grade, with disastrous results. He was weepy, anxious, sensitive...and it finally blew up about 4 weeks in with a genuine rage. We had to switch back to the regular Adderall.
So far, so good with Concerta. He's less moody, but it's too soon to say that's because of the medication switch or if he's just having a good week. I've noticed he's slightly more hyper (his hyperactivity is in the severe category) with the Concerta, but, it isn't out of control as when he has no medication. It also takes a little longer to work in the morning because of the slower release.
I think the switch will be good for us because there's little change and he doesn't want to take medication at school.
Of course, I have no feedback yet from his teacher about his attention. We'll see.
