There's a new cognitive enhancement med from Cephalon called Provigil (modafinil). It's not ADD-specific, but has been very effective in the treatment of memory disorders, sleep disorders and cognitive dysfunction.
I'm wondering if anyone has come across this, and if it has been tried (or if a family member has tried it). It seems to me it might be effective in our world, too.

hi douglas, i'm trying provigil. i have depression and MAJOR stress as the single mom of my bipolar/adhd ds8. I am tired ALL the time. My dr suggested i try it and it has worked well so far. it comes in 200 mg, but my dr suggested only half a pill, sometimes i even take just a quarter. it does give me a boost, but i have to be careful about taking it before i go to work. i work in health care regulation and the stress is heavy and relentless. some days that i take the provigil and am having a verrrry stressful day, i think i feel a little more anxious on the med. overall though, it think it's a good med.

I haven't tried provigil and neither has my son ,but it sounds very very interesting! I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I'm pretty sure I have ADD. I also have a very hard time with sleep, I can't sleep through a whole night, even with using sleeping pills. I'm sorry I can't be of any help, please let us know if you (or a family member) have decided to try this, and your results. It would be wonderful if there was another medication out there for adhd symptoms, with (hopefully) less side effects. Good Luck! Amsmom, I'm glad this is working for you, the only thing that I'm wondering about is the anxiety part because I have alot of that,I could however try it at night, for sleep. Bless your heart, you must REALLy have a stressfull life! Being a single mom is hard enough, but dealing with a child with these disabilites alone....I admire you! TJ

Thanks TJ, that's very sweet of you to say! I am pretty stressed most of the time, but in the moments that my ds8 comes up to me unexpectedly and says, "Mommy, I love you so much", my heart melts and it's all worthwhile!
btw, dont try the provigil for sleep! it's more like an energizer.

Thanks, guys! I really want to give this serious consideration, but I appreciate the warning about the med causing possible anxiety. My problem is that Concerta makes me feel really antsy, and doesn't specifically focus my powers of concentration ... it just makes me very awake (in itself a good thing, but on balance with the antsiness, not a help overall) ...

hey douglas, you could see if your dr has some samples (mind did) and then try taking a half or a quarter on a weekend to see if you feel anxious. i do feel more awake, but i am still undecided as to whether i concentrate more. hard to say...

My son is trying to find something new. We tried provigil, what a joke. He was non-stop full of energy and could not sleep. Actually provigil is usually prescribed for Narcolepsy. People who can not stay awake.

Does anybody know whether the clinical trials for Provigil as an ADD treatment have gotten anywhere yet? It is pretty expensive and my physician doesn't know whether or not it can be formally prescribed for ADD/ADHD. (Provigil is already approved for a lot of other disorders)
