My son Jared took a break over the summer because I wanted him to eat. While on concerta he won't eat hardly anything. Now back to school he has been back on it for about a week. He has been real irritable, crying after school and definitely can't say no to him. I don't remember him being this bad and moody before. He is taking 36 mg. We have tried a lot of meds. I feel like when he was on ritalin again the rebound was terrible. I am getting stressed out again. help!

Did you start back with 36 mgs?You might have to start back at 18 mg for a week and then go up to 36.When my daughter was on concerta she was on 27mgs and we stopped it for a week because she had a tonsillectomy. We had to start back with 18 mgs because on 27 she had the same side effects as your son.We did go back up to 27 mgs after a week with no problems.Just an idea....

I took Jarrett off of his Concerta for the summer, also. When school had got out last year, he was on 54 mgs. There was once or twice during the summer when I gave him his meds (ex. baseball camp for a week), and I noticed that his 54 mgs really zombied him out. So I gave him some 36 mgs that I had left over. They did the same thing. So I called his doc and had them write up a scrip for 27 mgs. He did much better on that. We started school with it and when I ran out, I had the doctor bump it up to 36. But I still haven't had to raise him to 54. I hoping I won't have to. His teacher this year seems much better at dealing with him than last year's. She seems genuinely surprised when I ask her if she has had any trouble out of him. She told me that he lacked focus at times and that's why I bumped him to 36, but I told her I'd rather not go back up to 54 if I didn't have to and she said "Well, we'll just deal with it then, won't we?"
Maybe you should call your doc and ask for a lower doseage?

Hi I too, agree that it may be too strong for starterĀ“s. You should try with a lower dosage. Btw; do you have 27mg pill of conserta We have only 18mg and 36mg, nothing in between....

Hi there. My DS (8yrs) is on 36 mg of Concerta and has been on it for a year. I also give him Omega 3s DHA/EPA and vitamin E for his moodiness and it has help tremendously. You might want to try that.
There is a section called Natural ALternatives on this websites and there are two experts named Catatonic and OhMama who are very familiar with Omega 3s.
These supplements have been a life saver and they are good for the body.
Good luck to you and your child.

I'm pretty sure it was a 27. I know it wasn't an 18. But we've gone through so many meds, now you have me wondering..... I'm 99% sure it was 27, but I'll check tonight when I get home.

Had doctor's appointment. Jared has lost 3 lbs. He suggested taking him off concerta for a week then try 27 mg instead of 36mg to see what happens. Then he also mentioned paxil for anxiety instead of buspar. I am not so sure about paxil for him. He is also taking fish oil 1,000 mg a day. Thanks everyone for your support.
