I have a 16 year old son that was diagnosed as ADD this summer. He is now taking 20mg of Adderrall XR and it is working great. He says that it makes him care about school even though he cared before but didn't show it. I have always described him as a very laid back, easy going child. Well, the psychologist and the school psychologist that tested him this summer both say that they think he holds things in. He has three best friends that he has had since he was 6 years old and he sees them alot but he is not very social at school. He goes to school with one of his best friends brother and the brother commented to me that my son is so different at school. He will talk your ear off at home but at school he is very, very quiet. Yesterday he had to go and have two teeth filled at the dentist and also have a "flap" of skin cut off of his cheek on the inside of the mouth. He was so nervous and finally vocalized this to me. He had never been this way before and he told me that he just kept it all in before. Does anyone think that this could be classified as anxiety? Is there a medication that could help?

Anxiety is closely related to depression. I think Adderrall would make anxiety problems worse so it's probably depression on top of adhd minus the h? Does this make sense?

I do understand the ADHD minus the H which he most definitely has. I always thought that depression showed itself differently in kids. I thought that it made them have the anger outbursts? He has never had the anger outbursts. His 6 year old brother does drive him crazy but they are two totally different personalities. My 6 year old is very active and gets on the older ones nerves because older son is definitely not hyper. He does go to the psychologists once a month now since the testing is over and that is just to "talk". Would she notice depression once they start just talking and not testing? What signs do I need to look for on depression? I have asked my husband several, several, times if he thought there was depression involved and keeps saying no but gosh he didn't think there was ADD involved. I do know that self esteem is somewhat of a problem because of his struggle with school and I am hoping and praying that the new school we have him in really helps out with boosting his self esteem. Right now he is doing great in school and feels really good about school.

I would think that the psych would notice if there was something going on with regard to depression.
I'm not too familiar as of yet with depression, but if you go to the general section, there is a thread that is titled something like I think I'm depressed. It has lots of good information in it, from the way it is felt personally.
I think that if he is holding it all it up til now, he'll be better with the counciling sessions, as he won't have as much on his mind and it can give him a chance to focus better.

Anger issues and outbursts like tantrums are symptoms of a temporal lobe disorder. Please go over to www.brainplace.com and take the brain system checklist test. This will give you some ideas about what could be wrong and what to do about it. The symptoms of depression in a 16 year old would be similar to an adult.... I'm out of town right now and so away from my notes. I always like to quote from the experts so I'm not just giving you my opinion but I'm sure others will be able to respond to this thread with more specific information. One of my sons was just diagnosed with depression and his symptoms are low energy, lack of interest, anger due to frustration, negative mood behavior and feeling sad without a reason. If you have a good psychiatrist she should be able to draw this out but they are not always tuned into looking once they think they already have a diagnosis. You have to dig a little to uncover these things sometimes. I think you should mention it to her.

ohmama, thank you so much for the brainplace website. I went and took the test and it came back "highly probably" on the ADD which I already knew. The first time I met with the psychologist I did mention depression to her. She has met with my son four times but most of the time was the testing. Now we are starting the therapy. She did talk with him about depression and he told her that he didn't think that he was depressed. He said that he doesn't feel sad and hasn't been sad. One thing on the brainplace website the doctor mentioned a supplement called Ltyrosine. Should I start giving him this also? I am giving him a multi vitamin, ordered the Nordic Naturals DHA and I need to buy some magnesium. Should I also look into buying the vitamins at a health food store or can I just buy these things at Wal Mart or is there a website you would recommend for buying the supplements? Sorry for all of the questions, I just want to make sure that I am giving him something that will benefit him and help him.

Laura, I'm not sure it would be wise to give the Tyrosine along with Adderrall. This would be a question for the pharmacist because the amino acids are more than a vitamin and there is a possibility of a reaction if you mix this. They both target the Dopamine production. I find the online sites can give me a better price for supplements. Some of my favorites are.... www.iherb.comwww.houseofnutrition.comwww.herbaladvisor.com

ohmama, thank you so much for the advice. I am going to go and check out the supplement websites and do some ordering. What is the website that you have given before that shows what supplements to take or not to take with certain prescription meds?

www.savonhealth.com/savonhealth/savonmain/medical.aspxscroll down half way to the Alternative med section and click on Drug-Nutrient Interactions. Then click on the name of the med to get all the info. I know there are other sites that give this information also but this is the one I'm most familiar with.
