Haven't been on these boards for a long time but need some help from you all. My son, 20 years old has inattentive ADD with his major problem being impusivity. He has only ever been on Wellbutrin for six months when he was 17 and I think it helped him but he hated it as he said he felt like he had a wet blanket on his brain. He has never been medicated as we live in a european country where stimulants are not available. He really does need treatment now for his depression, he has been up and down with depression for years and with or without his ADD problems this needs to be addressed. I was thinking of trying him on Prozac, I read that it is good for the impulsive side of ADD and hopefully it will level out his moods. He is in excellent health and is very athletic. What do you all suggest??? I think most antidepressants are available her. Thanks

Hi Rosie, nice to see you here again As for your son, sound´s like he really need´s to see doc for help, depression can be treated quite easily. Get him to the doctor and demand him to get some help. I hope someone else can help you with your med-question, I´am not familiar with antidepressant at all. Nice to have you back

Have you considered St. John's Wort or SamE? A high protein diet helps too. Is he taking any omega 3 fatty acids?
By the way it's good to talk with you again. Glad you're back, and I hope you won't be such a stranger. We have missed you!

Thanks for your help. Yes, please some of the rest of you help with with which antidepressant to ask the Doctor for. ADD is not known where I live and does not even have a name in Portuguese. There are no meds on the market for it as stimluants are banned here. Thanks Oh Mama I will try him on the St. John's Wort, it certainly works for me!! Really helps me get thru some days. I will look into the Smae, don't know much about it. My son is working on the other side of the world but I thought my doctor could give me a prescription and then I could mail it to him. He actually says he is receptive to try something which is a big step, only in the last six months will he even discuss his problems so maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel. thanks for all you help.

Take a look at the post in the General Non ADHD topics by camismom called, "I think I'm depressed"
I take Zoloft and have for the better part of 9 years. Most of the time, the doctors don't find the right anti depressant the first time. On average, it takes about 3 attempts to find the right medication for each individual.
The important thing is to recognize that it is simply an unbalanced chemical thing. Like having diabetes. You just have a medical problem, it doesn't make you crazy or stupid, just missing an essential chemical in your body.
Make sure the doctor understands what is going on in his life... that he can't stay focused on something for too long because his brain is working faster than his body can.
Good luck to him and to you.

Hi Rosie ... My son is also ADD (very little H) and is 16. He has been on St. Johns Wort (& Concerta) for the past 18 months + and I can honestly say the result has been amazing! ... It doesn't work for everyone though but it sure works for my son and I hope, hope, hope it works for yours!
One thing though ... I get him a "once a day" SJW tablet ... rather than the 3 times a day tablets which seem more usual with SJW ... I would suggest shopping around for these 1 a day tablets because for a young person three times a day is really impractical for them! ... One tablet in the morning and then forget all about it is far better!
GOOD LUCK!!! I hope this works for your son!

JUST BE CAREFUL, St. John's Wort should [glow=red,2,300]NOT[/glow] be taken with prescription anti depressants. Check with your doctor about this, please.

Good point Tridlette. Same goes for SamE or any natural alternative that enhances Serotonin.

Thank you for all your advise and support, up until now it is all I have had. I went yesterday to my old family Doctor, who now just started to take my insurance plan, she is a lovely woman and knows me well. I had not seen her for about four years so there was lots of hugs all around. I started to explain my stress/depression problems and related high blood pressure and I told her about my son. She also knows him quite well and said to me is he being treated?? I said no but he is seeing a physch. on Friday but there are no meds for him here. Then she said there is now, six months ago the government approved Concerta and Ritalin SR onto the market here, we read the pharmaceutical book together. She gave me the name of a doctor who specialises in ADD and she also was quite knowledgable about it and said she would prescribe whatever we thought was best for him. I am very pro natural medicine but it is wonderful to know that there are now meds available for my son as he desperately needs help so he can have a few successes. His self esteem is at rock bottom. I left her office feeling so much better, like I had found a friend here in this country to talk about my ADD coping. She is the first doctor that I had said the word ADD that did not look at me like I was from outer space, she knew so much about it. Anyway just my vent, but my old chat friends will understand!!! He is seeing the physch on Friday and then he can also go and see the GP who specialises in ADD and maybe we can get him to take that first little baby step.............. Thanks my friends and good night.

I'm Canadian born but lived the past 15 years in Portugal. They just approved stimulants on the market here after a long battle with the politicians. Portugal has a very big street drug problem and is was frowned on by the governement to market stimulants. But I guess the drug companies won out. I just feel so much better knowing that we now have OPTIONS.
