The ped we saw was not at all concerned with the liver test results. He said it was very common for the enzymes to be elevated in children and they were not that high. He did order another test to be done in 2 weeks and we will go from there. He gave the boys a very thorough physical exam. I like this doctor.
I have a psych appmt on the 16th of this month. He will be the one to prescribe a new antiseizure med. Also, a neuro appmt in November to check out a serious hand tremor. He has always had this tremor but it is worse now that the Depakote has stopped. His anxiety level is real high and I can't wait for the appointment to address this! Starting school will be hard this year with all these problems.
I wonder if you all know how great it is to see your concern?

Glad you found a doc that you like. That takes a lot of worrying off of your shoulders. ;D Also glad to hear that he thinks things will be okay. It stinks that your boy is going to have to start school in the midst of a med crisis, though. Hopefully you'll have an understanding teacher. Keep us posted!

I don't know how to say it. All I want to do is cry. I don't like this new psych. He was so disinterested he almost fell asleep. I strongly suspected he was on some kind of sedative or something. I have noticed that it seems very common to not be able to tell the doctors from the patients in this field of psychiatry. At least with the ones I keep getting. This one never even heard of Dr. Amen or Dr. Wilens. I was afraid to ask if he ever read anything by Russell Barkley for fear I would have to leave the office at that point if he said no so I didn't ask, LOL!
Here's what he said. He agreed with the ped who said that the liver enzymes were not that elevated and he would not be concerned about it. Even though the blood test came back as perfect once we stopped the Depakote. Now, I'm no doctor but doesn't that mean the Depakote was causing the problem? He wants to go back on the Depakote and stop at 750mg (before we were at 1000mg). When we were on the 750mg before he was starting to show some tantrums so that's why we went to the higher dose of 1000mg.
We are starting back up with 500mg now and will get a blood level and liver function test in 2 to 3 weeks. If the test shows the enzymes are up again we will go to another antiseizure med. He didn't know what other med to try because of possible side effects with them. For example Lithium would make his hand tremors worse. I agree with this but am disappointed he did not have other suggestions on what to try. I will have to study that new book I just got from Amazon, "Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medication for Kids, revised edition". This book is really informative. I suggested to him that he read it. Even that didn't get a rise out of him. The man needed a nap.
On twin #2 who suffers from depression he prescribed 25mg of Zoloft. This worry's me because I suspect he may have bipolar also, just not as apparent as fire boy. This doctor says he may have it also from the family history. If he does it would trigger a manic episode. He wants to experiment, that's not what he called it but that's what it is. I think he should have a mood stabilizer first and then the Zoloft. The doctor said he does not want to add too many meds together. I appreciate his caution but I want to see results. We will see what happens.
Maybe I'm just over reacting because I am impatient? I would like to think this doctor knows more than me but he doesn't give me any confidence the way he presents himself. When he handed me the slip for the new liver test I had to remind him to include the request for a Depakote blood level too.

Professor Ohmama, I had to chuckle as I read about the book for pysciatry for kids, I was thinking you should have told him to read up on it, BUT LOOK you already did That doesn't surprize me though So basically the psych said that he's starting with what he wants to make sure of his own observations? That's the jest that I get wanting to put fire boy BACK on depacote, sorry if I spelled that wrong ((((((((hugs)))))))))to you, fire boy and T2 About the only thing to give you aince I'm not too keen when it comes to meds.
