My son was perscribed Risperdal a while ago and we didn't think it was working. We realized later, it was probably because of a nasty ear infection that has been going on for months.
After trying it again (with good results, I think) I've come to read all the bad press the med has recently been given. The drug cos. drive me nuts!!
To make a long story short, is this used as a mood stablizer or what? I remember many of you writing that it has really helped your kids.

Hopeful, The primary purpose of Risperdal is that it is used to treat schizophrenia. It is in the antipsychotic family and works on balancing dopamine and serotonin. It has also been approved by the FDA for treatment of bipolar mania. This is often given along with a mood stabilizing med like Depakote untill the Depakote kicks in. Sometimes then the risperdal is stopped, sometimes not. See www.risperdal.com for more information.

Risperdal is used for children with serious aggressive behaviors. My dr has assured me that the dosage my ds is on (1.5 mg) does not cause these frightening side effects that we have all read about. That doesn't mean that I don't worry anyway, but I can see how it helps improve the quality of life for my ds. The dr did inform me of the side effects of movement disorder, lactating breasts, that can occur when he first prescribed it. I was terrified and remain vigilant about monitoring my ds and any changes, but KNOCK WOOD, he has done very well.

Thanks for the replies. I just needed my memory jogged. I was told all the "bad stuff" 6 months ago and I just couldn't remember. You still can't help buy worry, and I don't care how "safe" a med is. It's all too scary!
So far, 2 weeks, no side effects at all and only good results. He's much calmer all around, and he still gets mad but in a "normal" way. We aren't walking on eggshells anymore.
I'm only giving him .25 morning and night.
