ohmama, my ds8 also takes risperdal, which was really hard for me to agree to. he takes it for aggression and i have seen the difference it makes. although i wish he didn't need it, i can definitely see how it helps. i'm guessing that the depakote "er" is for extened release. what does your dr say his/her experience is in the benefits compared to regular depakote? has he/she seen better results in behavior/mood? thanks and keep us posted

I have been called out of town this past week and have not had a chance to read all the new stuff on the board. I thought it may be better to start the new dose of 1000mg Depakote when I returned so it will start tomorrow the 18th.
Yes, this Depakote is extended release and taken once a day. The Dr feels this will be better than the split dose of 500mg twice a day. Hope he's right! He says when there is a need to go to this high a dose he uses the ER and has seen good results. I know we need to use this dose so I'm anxious to try it.
I know how you feel about using the Risperdal. The side effects are frightening to think about. It is also frightening to think about not using what is necessary to help your boy. You made a brave decision and it seems to be working. I know if you were to see bad effects from giving it you would stop. That's all any of us can do, isn't it? In my opinion you cannot hold back treatment because of a fear that may never happen. This med has helped MANY people.

You should have seen how difficult it was for me the day the dr recommended Risperdal and then told me the side effects. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. I felt like I would be putting poison in my son's mouth. If it wasn't for the tremendous respect and trust I have in the dr, I don't know if I could have done it. Thankfully, my ds has done well on it and experienced no side effects (KNOCK WOOD!!) I wish you tons of luck with the Depakote ER. You are such a good mom and have done everything possible to help your little guy. Those boys are lucky to have you!

We are all lucky to have this board. I really appreciate everyone here. Even those who disagree or question things contribute and make you think it out. It all helps in making these important decisions for our kids. It's never easy but what is?
You're doing the right thing for your child, hang in there!
