My son is 11 and his doctor has just put him on wellbutrin. He is on strattera right now and he has been on ritalin and ritalin la. We can't go up on the stims because of the ticing he has. His psych diagnosed him with depression yesterday. I thought I saw somewhere online that you shouldn't take wellbutrin with strattera. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi andrewsmom, Unfortunately, my son got horrible tics from Wellbutrin SR. Apparently, that is not a known side effect, but the tics did stop when we stopped the Wellbutrin. He was doing these strange body jerks while he was on it and said that his brain was telling him to do it. Poor little guy was becoming exhausted from all the jerking movements. As I said, it is not a known side effect, so hopefully, it will not happen with Andrew. Kids respond differently to meds. My ds was not on Strattera while on the Wellbutrin. He is on other meds (Depakote, Risperdal, Elavil). I don't mean to scare you andrewsmom, but just wanted you to know of our experience. It may not happen to you at all! I will cross my fingers and toes for you both. The other experience we had was that my ds had trouble sleeping with the Wellbutrin. Good luck mom, keep us posted!

Andrewsmom, my 8 yr old ds was taking Concerta and Wellbutrin but was on large doses and having some anxiety problems so it was decided to switch him to Strattera. When we started the Strattera we immediantly took him off the Wellbutrin. I have never heard of anyone being on both Wellbutrin and Strattera but I am surely not an expert on that. We are weening the Concerta now. I would question his doctor on if he should be on both at the same time. Are you having any problems with Strattera? Sue

I would also ask the pharmacist about using this combination. They can be as helpful/knowledgeable as doctors with medication. If they don't know they can look it up on their computers. There is also a website www.savonhealth.com with a drug interaction checker that you can try. I don't know if this combo is listed there though.

I am not really a fan of Welbutrin. I had a bad expeirence with it. The side effects were pretty bad.
I think one of the reasons that the side effects can be bad is b/c you have to build it up in your system. Then they appear slowly, until they are really apparent.
I don't about taking them together, but I'd keep an eye on anything that changes in him, good or bad, and make a note of it. Then if you do start having problems you can see exactly when the started.
I hope it works for him...good luck...Becky
