After being on Concerta for over a year, Steven finally tells me that it's been making him say wierd things (which could explain the trouble we've been having with the kids picking on him). He hasn't be says words, but just jibber jabber. He knows he's saying it, but can't stop. The ritalin I gave him today didn't make him do that. Anyone hear of this side effect?  |

Could this be a kind of tic? Sounds like you should check with your doc.

Brooke is on Concerta and Strattera, and she babbles all the time. Get it... Babbling Brooke!
OK, anyway, she has always babbled nonsensical words, even prior to the meds, so I think it is normal for her.
Is this something new for your son? I agree with geewiznet, I would ask the doctor about it, especially since you son says he can't stop doing it. I does sound like a tic.

If the ritalin didn't make him do it...then I would be suspicous of the concerta.
Paul has always been a motor-mouth with or without the concerta...so not much help there.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Concerta and Ritalin basically the same med, just in different forms? I thought that Concerta was just a time released form of Ritalin? I don't remember where I picked that up from, but was under the impression that was the case. If that is true, would you have different side effects form one vs. the other?
It does, however, sound like a side effect to me, also. I have heard of kids having verbal tics because of meds.

My son is on Concerta. He's been on it for at least 9 months. When we first started the doctor started him on 27 mg. His teacher and I noticed he talked alot on that dosage. The doctor up the dosage to 36 mg and that seem to take care of him talking so much. The 36 mg seems to be the key dosage for him.
Also, I noticed after I give him the med in the morning, it usually takes about 1/2 hour to kick in. Well during that 1/2 hour before it kicks in, I notice him talking more, but then it subsides when the med kicks in.

I understand that the "ingredient" in both ritalin and Concerta is "methylphenidate" ... which means to all intents and purposes they are the same thing... BUT what really confuses me is the Ritalin XR... and I would love to know what the difference is between Concerta and Ritalin XR ... because to me they are BOTH slow-release ritalin! ... But maybe I am missing something? Can anybody help us out here? |

It is my belief that concerta is a milder form of ritalin...but like Anne I am a bit confused about ritalinXR.

As I understand it, Ritalin, Concerta and Metadate CD all contain the same active ingredient, methylphenidate. Each of these meds is made by a different pharm. company, and Concerta and Metadate CD have a different delivery system to make the methylphenidate last longer. I would assume that this is the case for the Ritalin XR (the company that makes Ritalin is making an extended med to make it last longer.) What is different between Concerta and Metadate CD is the actual delivery system, or the way that the methylphenidate is released. Concerta is a white pill enclosed in some kind of clear plastic looking tube that somehow (don't ask me how!) makes it last thru 2 or 3 med doses. Metadate CD is a capsule composed of all kinds of tiny time released beads, like the Contact cold pills.
Altho both Concerta and Metadate CD contain the same basic med, they can have different side effects. The Concerta gave my son a stomach/headache 1 hour after taking the pill. (Which is how I know about the clear plastic tube; I had extra so I dissolved one to see what it looked like!) The Metadate CD, with it's different delivery system, didn't have any negative side effects for my son. (Before we increased it to 2 pills my son's doctor had me divide the capsules contents, which is why I know what they look like inside!)
Just as with all things ADHD related, what worked for my son may not work for yours! Unfortunately it is somewhat trial and error!

Here is a thought. Your child trusted you enough to tell you about this and it concerns him. That to me suggests that you have a good relationship with him and that Concerta may not be the correct medication for him. It's certainly worth discussing with the doctor. He's making an attempt to be involved in his own healthcare so by all means let him do so.
Also all medications give a list of the most common side-effects. It also says there may be other less common side effects that are not listed. Anything unusual should be mentioned to the doctor for this reason.

I agree with momx2 and other´s who suggested you should mention this to your doc. If this didnt happend before conserta, then it may make your ds a motormouth, worth of mentioning, after all it does bother him  My ds is on 18mg conserta on schooldays only, he talk´s, sing´s, yell´s etc. constanly with or without med´s... I think that conserta has made him a little more quite than normal, but you know, everyone respon´s to these med´s individually. Talk to your doc. Get it out of your chest. |
