since my almost 4 yr. old son was able to swallow the focalin pills- after three weeks we are starting concerta now. i gave him his first 18 mg today around 10am and he has been quiet the last two hours. i don't know if this med takes effect immediatley or over several weeks. anyone has bad luck with this medicine?

Bransmomma [glow=red,2,300]GOOD LUCK[/glow] Like Linda says, conserta work´s emmediately, it doesn´t have to "built up". we´ve been happy with it, ds8 took´s 18mg/schooldays only(since dec/03), seem´s good so far. We most propably have to increase the dosage next fall, but all and all, this seem´s like a good one for us. I keep my fingers crossed for you!! Marja

So how did the first day go? Hoping it was smooth and that this medication will be "the one" for your little one!

Just to repeat what everyone else has said ... Concerta has also been wonderful for us ... and yes the effect is immediate ... (from a survey we did recently here it takes up to an hour - sometimes less time depending upon the child) ...
GOOD LUCK WITH IT!!

It is nice to hear so many positive results. Day two and it seems to be helping. I've noticed him just being a little more quiet than usual and better behaved in the stores. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this continues this week at daycare and he doesn't get into trouble.
We went fishing today w/ my friend and her daughter and Brandon (my son) started freaking out about the bugs. It was crazy. Yelling, crying, brushing his legs off even though nothing was on them. He was so worked up we went back up on the gravel away from the water and still scared. We had to walk back to the car and the entire time he was looking at the ground for bugs and brushign his legs. I've never seen him react this way. He usually loves being outside. And idea if Concerta causes dillusions or paranoia?
I'm hoping tomorrow goes well at daycare. Brandon's "special teacher" (from his moring preschool for ADHD) is visiting the Kinder Care. She is going to observe him and see how the staff reacts to his behavior and give them suggestions.
Hope everyone had a good weekend. For once mine wasn't totally stressful....hmmmm.

I am glad you had a better week-end.As for the concerta causing paranoia...thats a new one on me...hopefully it was just a 1 time thing about the bugs :)Let us know how it goes tomorrow in school.

And idea if Concerta causes dillusions or paranoia? Here are the side effects of concerta. You should be able to find it with the insert that comes with the meds, or go to www.concerta.net It does list Psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations). Pls check with your doctor. Concerta Side Effects include: _ abdominal pain _ aggravation, nervousness, hostility, sadness _ drug dependence _ dizziness _ headache _ tics _ insomnia and prolonged sleepiness _ loss of appetite _ increased coughing, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infection _ vomiting _ allergic reaction _ increased blood pressure _ psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations).

Just for another view on concerta, it didnt work for my sd... 18 wasnt enough, and 36 was the next highest dose, my sd got really really obsessive... A piece of lint on the floor would really bother her, she was constantly pointing out to the teacher any little thing that was out of place (and us!) it was very hard to deal with that side effect, so we went to adderall xr 30 mg... Good luck

Good luck Cat, I wonder why your doctor did not prescribed the 27mgs. Concerta does come in 27mgs.

Really? When did that come out? Maybe it was after sd started the adderall xr? I thought 18 and 36mg were the only doses for concerta.... hmmmm interesting
