We started Brenna on the prozac about 3 weeks ago for her anxiety. She also takes Ritalin and Clonidine for her Adhd. We are noticing a big increase in her hyperactivity. It is like you never gave her the Ritalin at all!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe even worse than before we started the ritalin. Has anyone else noticed this with the SSRI's ? Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is out of control!!!!!!!

Shelli;
I have a ds8 who is very sensitive to changes in Meds. About the Ritalin, when we added clonidine to his Meds. his anxiety started to taper off...however he was like the child we had known before putting him on Meds. we talked to his Doc. and she told us that in some children clonidine can counter effect the Ritalin. I don't know if that is the case with Brenna. I would check though. I hope things calm down for you soon, it sounds like my house right now...
Have a peaceful day, Christina

Shelli, My son was on Prozac for a short time 4 yrs ago and it was horrible. He was SO hyper and wound up, also it increased his heart rate terribly.
Ritalin also made him more hyper and we dsicovered that he cannot take any stimulants. Was she doing well on the Ritalin before the Prozac? Maybe if you call the clinic where you have the May appt, they can fit you in sooner. The nurse was nice there, hopefully she will recognize the urgency.

Brenna was doing fine on her Ritalin before the prozac. She is out of control!!!!!!! Her hyperactivity is worse than ever and homework has been a night mare. I think I am going to have to call the clinic or somewhere. I am having trouble getting her to go to sleep again. This just does not feel right. It has been about three weeks now on the prozac. Her dad and brother have been staying in the basement in the eve. because I can manage her better when it is just her and I. If she has an audience it seems worse. Last night she was barking like a dog, jumping rope constantly, making weird noises, it took two hours to do home work, I could not keep her at the table. She was saying cuss words. This is not my child or I hope not anyway. she told me she feels like she is just going to explode. I think it may be helping the anxiety because she can't slow down enough to think about being afraid. I have to call some one tomorrow it obviously is not going to pass. thanks for all your replies and help. I will let you know what they say. Shelli

I don't have Prozac experience, but my daughter is on Paxil, another SSRI, for OCD, and it definitely has an activating effect on her. I believe this is a known possible side effect for SSRI's, and it certainly is a problem when it amplifies the ADHD symptoms. You might need to try a different SSRI, since they don't all have the same effect on everyone. Just don't stop the Prozac all at once---she will need to be either weaned off gradually or converted to another SSRI.

I am getting afraid to put her on anything!!!!! She is scarring me. She is so strange acting. If I take her off how long will it take to get out of her system? It took three week to get to this, I hope it does not take three weeks to go away. Thanks for the advice ! Shelli

My sd was on prozac, and it made her extremely violent... The dr said it may be a sign that sd has bipolar (I guess antidepressents can cause violence in bipolar kids?)... You really need to talk to the dr BEFORE takeing her off the prozac... With my sd they made us taper it off, instead of a sudden stop... I forget the schedule or the dosage she was on, but please talk to dr first... BTW THAT is a normal night for us!! You mean that isnt normal!?! LOL Sd is also facinated with horses, and crawls with a saddle strapped to her back, with reins in her mouth, and NEIGHS really really loud... Talk about annoying... ARGH Good luck with the dr!

I talked with the nurse today at the clinic we will be going to in May. The Psych. said ritalin and prozac often do not mix well. So we are weaning off the prozac and going to try and tough it out until May or if there is a cancellation they will call us. I have heard that before about the prozac and bipolar activation. It has been in the back of my mind, I fear that may be our diagnosis. Not to affend any one but that scares me. I picked her up tonight after work at my parents and they looked exhausted and she looked like a little wild animal. She was jumping around repeating the same thing over and over, and then she would say I am going to change now, and start repeating something else. Her hair was all messed up and she has a funny look about her. I can not describe the look. Hopefully she will make it until May. They did not say how long it will take the prozac to leave her system and for things to return to normal. (normal for her). All of this happened on just 5mg of prozac for 3 weeks!!!! Shelli
