Stephanie has been taking .5 mg tenex twice a day along with her concerta for a couple of weeks. She is doing great in school. The only problem is sleep. She was up till 12:30 last night.I thought tenex helps with sleep like clonidine. She used to take clonidine and it put her right to sleep but she couldn't take it during the day because it made her too sleepy.I don't know if upping the dose of tenex will help or not.I read that insomnia is a side effect of tenex. Her doctor prescribed clonidine and said I could try it at night and the tenex in the morning. He said I could try both or just up the tenex.I just don't like giving too many meds at once. Thanks,Brenda

My ds8 is on conserta and has also a slight problem with falling a sleep, not as rough as you descriped though. Sorry, I have no answer´s for you all I can offer is sympathy Marja

Hi Brenda ... Like Finnmom I also cannot speak for tenex ... but I can speak for concerta which my 15 year old son takes. This can "occasionally" (really quite rarely) seem to cause him difficulties in getting to sleep ... but it is NOT a significant problem ... just a "now and again - one off" problem ... However, I wish I knew more about tenex - hopefully somebody else will know more about this ....

Brenda, I know what you mean about not wanting to give more meds than you have to. We have had sleep problems with Honey since they day he was born. The one thing that really worked well for us was plain old Benedryl. I know it does not work for everyone, and I thought it would be a disaster since Honey usually goes nuts on stuff like that, but it works. They also make it in a dye free form.
I also use it myself, in fact, I used it last night and it was the best nights sleep I've had in months!
Others have tried melatonin, but we haven't. Just make sure what every you give her it OK to mix with her meds, don't want to over do it.
Good Luck...Becky

My daughter has taken Melatonin the past two years at the suggestion of her pediatrician. She is 5 1/2 now. At one point she was on 3 mg but the Strattera has allowed us to back off to 1.5. We see no side effects and our physician assures us that it safer than anything he could prescribe.
She used to wake up throughout the night constantly. Now we give her the Melatonin 30-45 minutes before bedtime in a sublingual spray (sublingual tablets as well as pills available) and now she stays asleep all night and does not have trouble waking up in the morning. I would suggest you give it a shot if you're hesitant to add more med's to the regimen.

Clonodine worked better for sleep for my daughter too. She took forever to fall asleep with the tennex. I swithched my daughter back to the clonodine. We originally stopped it because they wanted to try and treat her adhd with out stimulants, and they tried clonodine in am and pm and she was way to sleepy. so then they tried the tennex twice a day and it did absolutely nothing. So now she just takes her clonodine at bedtime and ritalin during the day. Shelli

I carried her for her check up yesterday and he diagnosed separation anxiety. He said that is why she can't sleep without us.She also cries every morning before school and tells me she'll miss me .Over the last month she's had symptoms that I've not thought about being separation anxiety. One day I left her in the car for a minute while I dropped my son off at his great grandma's.When I got back she was crying hard and told me she was afraid someone was going to get her and take her away from me.She tells me that she never wants to get married because she doesn't want to move out.She has been talking about dying alot because a little girl got killed in front of our house while waiting for the school bus 2 months ago.A car hit her and killed her instantly. We had to pass by the scene on the way to school and Stephanie saw her bookbag and jacket lying on the ground. She has been asking alot of questions about it.I haven't really though about it but maybe that is what triggered this.Last night she went to sleep easy because I went to bed with her. Thanks

Oh, Iám sorry your dd had to witness something so terrible. I think that most propably did cause these problem´s kid´s are so emotional and emphatic, especially adhd-kid´s, they can carry something´s out for a long time and still get really emotional of them even it has been a long time of the accident/something similar. Have you discussed about of it at all would that help or make it worse? Marja

My dd has used Melatonin for years. It is natural and won't hurt her. I even take it from time to time. It not only helps you fall asleep, but it also helps regulate your sleep pattern.
I'm so sorry to hear about the new diagnosis. I agree with someone else in thinking it may be a post traumatic stress. Try the Melatonin to help her rest/sleep, give her lots of hugs, and get back with that doc on some other suggestions. This can't wait until September. I'll be adding her to my prayers...

Hi everyone, newbie here. My 7 yo ds is on a 1 month trial of Concerta and the only problem he is having is not being able to go to sleep until around midnight. His brain just won't stop working. He is on the lowest dose and I am wondering if it should be increased or we should switch to something else. He has improved in his ability to focus but the impulsive behaviors that invade people's personal space and the mouth noises have not abated. It has been a solid 2 weeks now. He takes the one tablet in the AM around 7:30 when he first wakes up. We are also on the Feingold diet since Aug, 2003. We are planning on starting Omega 3 supplements soon. Any suggestions from a BTDT Mom would be greatly appreciated! Demiba

Brenda, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I am slao sorry to hear how bad she feels! That would upset anyone and I can see why she can't sleep.
I don't know if Beneydryl is OK to use with Tenex, I always check with the pharmacy first.
Dye free is good for kids who get even more hyperactive when they have artificial colors and dyes.
I really hope she starts to feel better, did he give you any tips to help her sleep better or any way to help treat the anxiety?
