My son 9yrs.old on Concerta 36 mg. He was taking Buspar and I haven't really seen a change in him. He has been on several meds. Seemed like an endless battle. Now doctor wants to put him on Prozac. He is a nonstop talking and is driving me crazy. He picks on his little brother non-stop.

My son is taking Buspar as he's adhd/anxiety. It seemed to TAKE FOREVER to help with his anxity, but I'm glad to say that is the one thing that is WAY BETTER.
However, the Wellbutrin XL he was taking for the adhd seems to not be working as well as it did. Is there a connection? I don't know. I don't know much about the SSRI's. I do know that they have helped alot of kids on this board. The new publicity surrounding the SSRI's doesn't help us parents with making decisions.

My teen Bean Sprout is taking Prozac. Almost a month now. It's been a remarkable change. The rage and sadness are not gone, but they're proportional to the event he's reacting to instead of being beyond extreme and sometimes even inexplicable. I wouldn't want him to be incapable of experiencing the full range of human feeling and I worried about that a little. I think he's himself now instead of kind of a prisoner of his own biochemistry. Don't think I'm expressing this very well.
The psych said it would take a month to take full effect but I saw improvements within just a couple days. We were tiptoeing around waiting for a rage inducing event to occur. Well it did but he didn't. I cried with relief that night. Didn't realize how wound up I was until a little pressure came off.
Within 2 weeks he seemed right as rain.
He's been on and off stims for years but we'd have to take him off because of anxiety attacks. Now he's taking 45 mg Concerta. One 27 mg and one 18 mg in the morning. Weird I know. But it works. And he's past the point where the stim would be messing with him. Maybe he needed the SSRI all along.

DS is on Prozac -- he's 8 y/o. I think life is just so much easier when he's on it. He gets dressed in the morning without screaming and crying, follows directions much better. Remember the old saying, "Prozac, the wonder drug!"? Well maybe it's not a wonder drug, but I wonder what we'd do without it. Christie

Thank you guys for the feedback. He also took Wellburtin SR and tried Imprimaine this past summer. He was terrrible worst than ever. The Imprimaine effected his heart beat so I didn't want to try it any longer. He also took Celexa and I didn't see no difference in him. I read Prozac is the best for kids. I sure hope it helps him. He is getting hard to live with.
