My 11yo DS has been on Effexor since 1st grade. We have had to up it and so forth. Right now he is on Concerta 108mgs and Effexor 37.5. They are both time released. He has been driving us crazy since May. Wanted to hold out on upping meds until school started. Took a drug holiday for the month of July-August. We did keep him on the anti-depressant-Effexor. Start back on meds lower dose. But back up to 108 mgs. Called dr. to see if we could up anti-dep. He had mentioned we could in May. We have been having alot of melt downs and defiant behavior. Come to find out they have now blackballed effoxor for children under the age of 18, due to suicidal tendencies-Great!! Now we are weaning him off the effexor, having loads of fun if any one was wondering ;D. Does anyone else give an anti-deps. and if so what and how does it work and what side effects. Thanks for any helpTEXT

Suprisingly, at least for Mikie, Strattera has been great this time around for his mini meltdowns. We give it after supper and from the first time we tried it i noticed it is not any good for is hyperness. but this second time around it does help with his mood in the morn.

I am surprised that a dr would perscribe Effexor for a child. I'm on it and I take 75 mg's each morning. Isn't a bit powerful for a child? When did they discover suicidal tendencies? I'm not suicidal. Have you noticed that your son gets headaches from being weaned off the Effexor? When I had a dose change, I suffered really bad migranes.

I went to a medical dinner last night. The speaker was Thomas Tsao MD from Virginia Beach. He is a reseacher for pychiatric meds for ADHD children. It was very interesting even though it was gears toward nuerologists and psychiatrists. One thing he brought up that I didn't know is that Stattera is Prozac without the floride. So Strattera is an antidepressant. I haven't researched Stattera as Jake is not on it. He also advised using Remeron, another antidepressant, to give Adderal a boost if you are on the higher end of dosing. I talked to him about all the side effects of Adderall, which is why we switched to Concerta. My 7 yr old takes 72mg of Concerta. We put him on Wellbutrin 100mg to help "boost" the Concerta. Wellbutrin is also an antidepressant. The combo has worked great for us and Jake has had no side effects from either med. Lucky us! He also did not recommend Paxil or Effexor due to the fact that they are not as effective as the other antidepressants. He also mentioned that he has been researching stims and using them in his practice for 35 yrs and in that length of time has seen NO adverse effects from these meds on the heart or liver. He said they are very safe and well researched meds. This of course doesn't include Strattera. He said studys have already seen a decline in the use and sales of Strattera due to the gastric side effects and to the length of time for it to get into the system and actually work. This very busy man actually gave me his card after I told him I was the parent of an ADHDer and told me to call him anytime if I had any questions. I was very impressed. Sue

Jorgy, thank you very much for sharing that information. Would you mind if I copied it and put in the Medication Forum? Or you can, it doesn't matter who. I think there are some members who 'stick' with their forum topics, and this would be great information for the members in Medication.

My 7 year old has been on the old standard (ritalin) We are having a hard time right now and an adjustment in meds is in order. We have not decided yet whether we will simply up the dosage, or if we should try some other medication. He seems to be having some issues with depression, so some have suggested that we might try Strattera.....however, the school counselor said that she has never seen that work for anyone. What is concentra? any luck with that? I am afraid that i might have to educate my family doc as to what the options are. The only other med we tried was Aderall and that was horrible. (he was an emotional wreck, crying all the time and saying he felt sad). Anyway. I would appreciate any ideas/ personal accounts of experience with different meds. thanks

Thasnk you for all the replies He hasn't had any headaches, sometimes I wish just because it slows him down. The suicidal tendencies only occur in children I was told.

Crazymoma, My 12 yr old daughter is taking zoloft and it has been wonderful for her. I saw the defiant behavior really improve after a few weeks. She has been on it for over a year now and I hope she can remain on it for as long as she needs it and it is working.
Concerta is the other med my daughters take, with a boost of focalin. in the afternoon for getting through the homework. I really like the focalin and so do the girls. They can tell a big difference in concentrating with no side effects! See what you can learn about focalin. It is new in TN and I have had to make sure the pharmacy has it in stock. Good luck!
