The family doc has just put my 7yo adhd 2nd grader on Concerta. 2 concerns. Fist he was not doing well at all on ritalin. Aren't these two meds the same.... they are both Methylphenidate. Then I notice on the information they gave us that it says it can make anxiety and agitation worse. My son is definetely suffering from anxienty and aggitation at school. He has only been on the meds 2 days, but both days have been bad. How long do I give this before I call the Doc and tell him we have to try something else?

You have legit concerns. Follow your gut feeling. I would again speak to the doc and express those concerns. Ask questions until you understand the answers. If you are still not satisfied you are obligated to get a second opinion. Don't worry if your present doc will be ticked. If he/she is worth anything they will respect this right. Good luck, Sue

I am certainly no expert on medicaiton, but I can tell you that from my experience (3 different meds and now no meds) when medication worked, it worked immediately. Any side effects were generally mild, so I felt I could ride it out to see if they would go away. I know drs. often say give it 2 weeks to see if the side effects go away, but I don't think I would wait that long if the side affects are interfering with him at school. Good luck.
