I had a 1 1/2 hour visit with my DD10 doc yesterday.. He had me in there alone while I filled him in on her past 2 months behavior. He called her in after I spilled my guts. He noticed her ticks and checked her reactions while holding her hand. He seemed sympathic and figured she isnt OCD, ODD, but is however ADHD and BiPolar. Her ticks were from the Adderall XR. Her body reacted to being back on them, and started the ticks to counter act the meds, so he said. He took her off the Luvox as well since the OCD behaviors didnt help with it. I got a new drug called Abilify 10mg once a day for her, and her Risperdal 1.5mg as a PRN now in the evenings. He is seeing us in 10 days to see how the new drug is and if we need to anti it up. He said he was sorry he couldnt get us in sooner, he is over-loaded with patients. He said he froze taking anyone new, that way he can help the patients he has now. This made me feel a little better. and cross your fingers and hope this new med helps her out.

...and her Risperdal 1.5mg as a PRN now in the evenings. Blue Oreo, I sure hope everything works out for your dd10. A couple of questions: What is Risperdal supposed to do? What does PRN mean? Thanks,

Blue Oreo, Risperdal is a serious antipsychotic med. I am surprised to hear it is used for sleep problems.

one of the side effects of risperdal is sleepiness. Both the girls here have been on it for over a few years and one over 5 years. Another side effect is delayed female hormonal things, I have a 17 yrs old who has NOT started her monthlys because of it. The doc only prescribe a low dose.. 1.5mg only.. it does the job and they sleep like babies all night.

I read in another post that it helps control impulsivity. (the child is taking it in conjunction with Strattera)
Have you seen if it is doing that as well, or can you tell?
The reason I am asking is Brooke is on Strattera and she is still pretty impulsive, and I am researching other possible meds for impulsivity.
Thanks,

You probably already know this Blue Oreo, but for those who don't, Risperdal is primarily used in bipolar or ADHD kids for aggressive behavior. My ds8 has been on it for several years and, thankfully, has not had any side effects. It has made a world of difference in stopping his once aggressive behavior. Abilify is also an anti-psychotic and hopefully, will help your dd10 with her behaviors. Only the best of luck to you Blue, you are an amazing mom!!!!!

I've been sitting with a filled prescription of Abilify in the cabinet for 2 months now, just sooo anxious about giving it to my daughter. But once again it looks like the stim route won't take us very far (one month on Ritalin LA and already we have to up the dosage). Our problem is impulsive talking--"outbursts" as the dean of students informed me on the phone today. No filter between the brain and the mouth. Random commments on everything that transpires in class. Critiques of everyone else's actions. So---I am so anxious to know how the Abilify works for you. My understanding is that it is a "better" Risperdal-type drug--fewer side effects, also an anti-psychotic, but, like Risperdal, prescribed in very low doses for mood stabilization in kids. Please let us know how things go!

Our foster daughter 17, who is on Abilify is doing super and has been for a long time. All her aggressions are gone, she no longer hurts anyone, nor is impulsive to hurt herself. I love the stuff, its only 10mg at night and its made a 100% change in her functioning life. Her grades in special Ed are A's and B's from failing grades of Incompletes for years. She doesnt have anymore outbursts and is able to do a workstudy job in a local grocery store. A few years ago, this would have been a nightmare if she wasnt on Abilify.
