I need some input please on Wellbutrin. My ds8 (adhd/bipolar) already takes Depakote and Risperdal. He was doing well for about a year. Lately, however, he has been much more angry, defiant and depressed. the psychiatrist (who I trust implicitly) added Wellbutrin 150mg XL to help my son's depression. He's only been on it for a week, and I know it takes a while to be effective. Ds still becomes teary very easily. What dosage worked for your kids and how long did it take to see improvement? Thanks for any info.

My 7 yr old is on Wellbutrin as well as Concerta. It is working well for him. As Wellbutrin is an antidepressant, it's full effect will occur at about 6 weeks. What dosage is he on? Jake is on 100mg in the AM and the dr wanted to put him on it in the PM also but I said no as he is not a problem at night. Just the AM dose works great for him. Thinking back we saw a small improvement after the first couple of weeks but we were doing this over the summer so he wasn't so contained and therefore not so frustrated. Good luck, Sue

Thanks Sue. He's on 150 mg. I really hope it helps, he has been crying at the drop of a hat.

My son is almost 7. He started with 100mgs Wellbutrin SR. It took 6 weeks before we saw anything at all, and that includes one of his only side effects: trouble staying asleep at night. I would guess it was about 8 weeks before we really saw the possitive effects. It's been really helpful. He is adhd/anxiety. Because we needed to add other meds for his anxiety that effected the Wellbutrin, he is currently on 150 XL + 100 SR in the morning. Since he can't take stims, this has been our answer.

Hopeful, Thanks for your response. It is really helpful. My son also is having trouble staying asleep (and actually getting to sleep as well). Thanks for the info.

My son (8) is SO HYPER in the evening, even though he takes the Wellbutrin in the morning. Did you have that problem? He was bouncing a ball in the house at 9PM last night and laughing loudly (actually screaming) at something on TV. I have tried to get him into bed by 8:30, like he used to be before the Wellbutrin, but he just can't settle down at all. I don't even try to get him to lie down now until 9PM because it is too frustrating for both of us. I read to him, sing to him, rub his back, play soft music, try different types of lighting, anything I can think of, but he still lies there wide awake and talking until 10 or later. He has to wake up at 6:30 for the school bus and he is way too moody if he doesn't get enough sleep. If you had this problem, did it get better, and if so, how long did it take? It is making me crazy. Thanks.

He still went to bed on time, he just would wake up several times a night. It took a while for this side effect to go away. They were also learning to tell time in school back then, and I'm still not sure if it was to tell me he could read the clock and know what time it was. He would yell out, " It's 1:30 in the morning! It's 5:30 in the morning!LOL. Sleeping is no longer an issue.
However, evenings have inconsistant as far as irritablitly. Kind of like a rebound, but I don't know why this would start now. We started August 1. This is so frustrating.
Overall, I think things are still better.
