HI My son has now been on Conserta 18mg for 2 week´s after christmas, schooldays only. He has always been a easy to get asleep, beeing in bed at 8.30 and sleeping at 9 pm. Now it´s not so bad, but almost 9.30-10pm before he get´s asleep. Today was really bad, he just felt asleep(Ihope ;D) it´s almost 10.30. I wasn´t a big help b/c I totally lost it, he was whining in his bed, making noice´s, jumping up, going to bathroom... I just lost it! I told him to calm down, be quiet, close your eyes, that just agraveted him . >:(I HATE it when they dont sleep at the proper time, I need my sleep, I cant calm down just at the minut they fell asleep I´am tired, my neck is jammed(?) he was crying, whining, just messing around...... OOOH I hate mysef I´ve had a lot of work lately, had a meeting this evening, haven´t been around, so this may be just a rebound for that.(So it´s my fault ;D, that fit´s ;D) He says it´s helping him at school A little inconvinient at nigth´s is not so bad if this is helping. Otherwice I haven´t seen any problem´s. Mayby beeing very strick of bectime, not jumping around and calming hin down properly at evening might help(whom am I kidding ;D) Well, this ended up to be a vent, sorry, I´am not even shure I put this on the right site. Sound´s like he is sleeping(TG) so mayby I´ll hit the pillow too. Good night! Marja

I HATE those nights... I have tossed and turned myself... For my sd though she isnt messing around, she just literally can not "fall" asleep... Staring at the ceiling, rolling around etc...
Anyway, would music help your son?? Or one of those things that puts lights on the ceiling to look at(I know they are for babies, but maybe would help)?? Or would that just hype him up??
They can use more meds, (which I know we all hate) to counter this side effect... It seems like such a losing battle sometimes doesnt it... Sorry I cant be more help... Good luck

Cat Thank´s for reply, this was the worst evening, he hasn´t messed around before, just like you said, can´t fall asleep.... We have radio on, it´s better than without it, he doesn´t want any light´s on before he´s at sleep, then I´am supposed to put a night light on ;D I know there is no magic to solve this one, I just hope this isn´t going to be our regular evening-battle. I most deffenately dont want to use any med´s for getting asleep. But the battle is over for tonight, peace has come, and I´am going to sleep! Thank´s again! Marja

Hopefully Marja..it was just a one time thing...who knows...I think it happens to all of us at some point.
Maybe a warm bath might help?

Finnmom, Ds had that problem at first he got use to it, I do give him a snack before bed now it helps. I found that when he was on it 5x a week he would sleep so much during the week end and then come monday he was up till 11:00 and by wedsday he was soo tired, Now he is use to it I would say he goes to sleep about 1/2 later then he use to but that just might be age....
he is 8 1/2 yo I he startes his bed time routine at 8:00 snack, then he reads and then we play a game and I finish by reading him a story 9:00 lights out usualy he is sleeping by 9:30

THANK YOU ALL! Linda, I hope you are right. mom2tj, good to know that this is something that they can get use to. I kind a think this was only one-time-event, I was so agrivated myself that I didn´t help at all. And to all: thank´s, i think I try this evening snack just before bedtime, and I got one good suggestion from theacher too, she told sd to read by himself just before bedtime, that may be more demanding than just listening, well, have to try everything..... If you are going to try a snack at bedtime, I read a magazine article that said if you eat cherries before bed they help you to sleep. Not the ones in a jar, but the fresh ones. It may be worth trying. This article was for getting a good nights sleep, not for adhd, but it may work.

I hate those bedtime struggles too! Is there anything tougher than a tired and cranky child that you are trying to settle down when you are getting tired and cranky too? We had sleep issues after we were on Strattera for awhile. Then even after we quit the meds we still had problems. We used melatonin for a few weeks, the 1 mg. sublinguils and they helped alot. Melatonin helps reset the sleep cycle. We gave it 30 min before bed for a week, then half a pill for a week and it really helped get us back on track. There is a thread a ways back on the Alternatives track that talks about melatonin if you are interested. Hope things get better.

Hi Marja ... My son (like yours) has always been an EXCELLENT sleeper ... and generally speaking on Concerta he still is ... it hasn't made a lot of difference to him (maybe half an hour later) a night ... BUT just now and again he mentions that he "couldn't get to sleep last night" ... I checked with him that this wasnt "usual" and he said "Oh no .. not at all ... normally I have no problems" .... so it seems to be a sort of "now and again one off" .... (Like Linda said "A one off") ... except with my son it is an occasional one off ... (i.e. happens more than once but VERY spread out) ...
So... if it shoes any sign of a "regular pattern" developing then I would get this checked out and maybe something else could help ... but HOPEFULLY it won't develop into any kind of pattern!!
Keep us posted!!

Anne i would go with this "occasionally off and on", it´s starting to look like that. It has been more of those ½an hour later night´s and only 1 or 2 really bad one´s. i can live with that ;D I´ll keep a close eye on him, let see how it goes on.... Thank´s! Marja

My kids are so different it is not even funny. Unless illness, Kat is asleep no later than 9:30pm. She even asks permission to go to bed early like on Mondays when she is up late on Sunday because hubby and kids take me to work so she don't get to bed until 10pm.
Now Mikie the later he stays up the better. If he is asleep before 10 or 11 than he is up at 2 or 3am and won't go back to sleep, than he has to go the whole day of school. Is so tired that he goes to bed early and it is awful, so I let him stay up about 10 or so I try to get him to settle in.
I have never once got the "That is so unfair!" from Kat that her baby brother can stay up later than her. She is a total monster if she stays up too late. And you can ask her someday, she really does ask permission to go to bed early.
She thinks that the bedtime 9:30pm means she has to stay up that late. No matter how many times I tell her, she still feels better when she asks.
But to answer the question, yes it could be the meds and you might want to try some herbal sleep aids before asking for a Rx.
