I feel awful. I took my son to his neurolist appointment today. His meds were increased about 3 weeks ago. I told the doctor that I did not like him on such a high dose because he seems withdrawn he was not zomby like just wanted to be by himself all the time and seemed to me to be overly focused. The doctor did his exam and then said that he was over medicated. AAAHH!! I am mad at myself for letting it go on. there was a week after he prescribed the up dose that it Ds was sick and could not take it at all. So once he started it could tell that he was not himself but dh said we would talk to the doctor at his appointment. I thought that was a good idea because I wanted to give the meds time to adjust. Now I feel awful he has not been himself. I hope that it leaves his stystem soon. I know the next couple of days will be hell but that is fine as long as I get my boy back. Just had to vent! Tha nk you for listening! Kelly

Kelly, I saw your reply on the multiple meds thread too. Most of the time too much stimulant self corrects immediately. They're pretty much out of the system within 24 hours.
I don't know about clodine.
Were all the meds decreased or just the stimulants?
Sometimes too much stimulant can make a kid hypersensitive to things for a while. Sounds are too loud. Lights are too bright. That sort of thing. If that doesn't wear off pretty quick a short course of some other med to reduce the sensitivity may be needed.
That happened once after a med increase right at the beginning of school. We decreased it within a week or so. We weren't sure if it was the meds or the nut case teacher that had Li'l Sprout so out of sorts. Turned out to be a little of both.
I can promise you that we won't make med changes when school starts again. One big thing at a time.
Deep breaths. You'll get your son back! Maybe so fast it will make your head spin!

The just decreased the stimulants. they upped the clodine before and I told them I did not like the effect on him so the decrease it back to what it was and increased the stimulant instead. Thiss is all a guessing game. I know the 30 mg of metadate is not going to do anything but I would rather that and see a happy kid again. My son is already sensitive to noise light does not bother him. Thank you for your help. It nice to know the will leave his system soon.

Kelly, I also did that a few years ago on Concerta. Jake became withdrawn and very quiet. It is hard to monitor his meds during the school year and bless her heart, his teacher told me that she thought he was getting too much. I felt awful too but it all passed. We are human and make mistakes but it is hard when it affects our kids. Sue

Kelly don't be too hard on yourself. You were doing what you thought was best for him. Honey was over-medicated one time also and he recovered just like Sierra said, w/i 24 hours.
It is a good thing that the Neuro. caught it. Like I have said before, good responsible doctors are priceless!

Kelly please don't worry ... !! I agree with Sierra - the stims are "in" and "out" of the system very quickly ... my son too was "over-medicated" on Concerta for a short time (a VERY short time because being 15 years old he very quickly told me that he was just "TOOO quiet" !!) ... but honestly the stims are (as Sierra says) out of the system within 24 hours and therefore pretty much instantly reversible ... Please don't beat yourself up about this!! ...

Thank you guys!
Today has been rough which I knew it was going to be. I told his teacher this morning that the meds have been reduced and she said that monday they seem to not be working as well. I did not inform her however that monday he woke up and ate chocalate before I was awake. I am now sleeping wit hthe door open so I know when he leaves his bed. I expalined to the teacher how he was acting at home and she agreed to give it a chance and see how is was acting. I understand that he is difecult at time when the meds are not right. And being he was really quite for so long I think she was just used to it but that is not him.
I am supposed to wait and see how the meds are working tomorrow and if needed at focalin add with the metadate on friday. I think this combo will be good. The focalin by itself help him to calm down but does not do alot for the focus so this should be a good combo.
It nice to know I am not the only one to go through this. I love his nueroligist. He is really a great doc and it makes up for the 45 minute office wait each time. Today I am really n the dump but It will pass once we get ds on the right meds. Kelly

Did't you say that he took two .1 mg on clonidine before bed?My daughter's dr said not to give her more than one .1 mg tablet and she is almost 6.Maybe the clonidine is making him drowsy the next day. When I tried to give Stephanie another half of a .1 it caused her to be sleepy the next day.Just a thought.......

Yes He takes 2 .1 at bedtime for him to sleep. He is up at 6:00 on the dot every morning. If he took it during the day it make him very sleepy that is why we do the night time dose. The tics are only bothersome during school not at home. I could careless if he maked noises at home. He has not chewed anthing in a couple of weeks. I am hoping that tic has subsided. Anyway he is 6 and weighs 46lbs. He also has a high metabilism It take alot to get the desired affect.

Dear Kelly, You didn't screw up, honey. The dr increased the dose 3 weeks ago and you were just following dr's orders. You didn't increase it on your own. You told the dr of your concerns when you had your appt and he then adjusted the meds. Everything will be ok. You should be seeing improvement soon. Please dont beat yourself up. We have too much "mommy guilt" as it is with all that we have to deal with. You did well, honey. Please know that. Hugs to you.

Thank you all for your kind words. It has helped. Ds is back to himself, full speed ahead. LOL He starts on the combined meds tomorrow. These past couple of days have been hard but I am just dealing with it because I am glad for him to be down stairs playing with everyone else. I hated him to be up in his room all the time playing by himself.
I love this site. I help when I can but read all the time. I am stil learning how to deal with all of this but am understanding I am not the only one.
Thanks again.
Kelly
