After 1 week of being extremely volitile, we took our son off of Concerta. He is now taking Strattera. (the med we suggested to the doc in the first place). He seems to be doing better. The Volitility is gone. His concentration and productivity still leave a little to be desired, but I understand it can take a while for the Strattera to really work for those things. An adult friend of ours takes Strattera and he said it was 8 weeks before he noticed any difference at all, and then saw a slow steady inprovement. He thinks it was 6 months before he felt that it was at its fullest effect. Anyway, as long as we don't have any melt downs, we will just give the Strattera some time.

Lost and Looking, My daughter Brooke has been on Strattera for a month now. She seems to be doing well.
I have kept a running post on it in the "Medications" section under the title "Just started Strattera"
Of course, all kids react differently, but maybe there is something in the post that you can use.
Good luck with you son. By the way, what is his weight and what dosage is he on?

Lost and Looking, You did not say what dose your ds was on. I was just curious. We started concerta a few weeks ago and have seen a change in his ability to focus. I know different meds work for some and not for others.

We started Concerta 18 mg today. I kept her home for the first day because of possible reactions. I actually had to go looking for her because it was so quiet. She was playing video games in her brother's room and they were getting along. She also has been extremely polite to me and calm. She has even had a good appetite. The only problems with her today has been brother teasing her when his friends came over and she is screaming at them to leave her alone. Can't blame her for that.

I am not sure what dosage of Concerta my son was on. He weighs 52 lbs. He is on 25 mg of the Strattera. I am glad others have had some sucess with Concerta. I wish it would have worked for my son, but it seems that Stimulants are just not workable for him. They send him on overdrive and he cannot control his emotions. Thank God someone came out with an non-stimulant medication!

So far no real issues on the Strattera. I am starting to see some improvement, but not like on the stimulant meds. We are just going to give it time.
He is much more controlled now, no melt downs at all since the switch. He is still not eating as much, so we will have to watch his weight. (which I was totally wrong about, by the way) He weighs 60 lbs. Which means he actually could be taking 35 MG of the Strattera, so we may have to do something with the dose a little later down the line. It only comes in 10, 18, or 40 mg. Maybe he can take 18 mg twice a day. Anyway, I will keep you posted.
How is the Concerta working out for the rest of you?

Lost and Looking, I am glad that you are seeing improvement. It looks like your son has been on it for about three weeks, right? Usually, experts say at least 4 - 6 weeks on target dose is when you see the best results.
25 mg does seem a little low for 60 lbs. You may want to talk to his pediatrician about it. I do know that too low or too high of a dose can cause undesirable side effects.
According to Strattera.com, Strattera comes in oral capsules of 10 mg, 18 mg, 25 mg, 40 mg, and 60 mg.
Right now, I am thinking about trying Brooke on a combo of Strattera and Concerta. She is doing well on just Strattera, but I remember that when she first started Strattera, she was on both for a couple days and I really thought she was really doing great.
Good luck and keep us posted.

I know this thread is a little old, but this is where my question fits the best. My ds (almost 6 yo) just started Concerta 18mg about 3 weeks ago. Things seemed to be going fine and then this week we had two days at school and one day at home with a lot of old pre-med behaviors. Lots of tantrums, problems making transitions, anger, outbursts, agitated activity. His doctor said to expect that his body may start to metabolize the meds faster and we'd need to up the dosage but this seems awfully soon after starting. He's a little guy(42 lbs.) and I'm afraid about giving him much more medicine. Anyone had experience with dosage adjustments this quickly? Should I be looking at different meds? Overall his response and the teachers evaluations of his behavior and progress on the meds has been positive, I don't want to lose our momentum!
Thanks, Shannon

Shannon,
I agree with the doctor. I think a bump up is in order here. I have experienced the same thing with Brooke (not on Concerta, but with other stims.)
The one thing to keep in mind with stimulants is that if you don't like what you are seeing, you can stop or drop back. They work quickly and don't stay in the system long.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Shanon,
My ds is 8yo 42 pounds ! and is now on 56mg of concerta he was on 18mg for only about 3 or 4 week too, dont worry to much about weight verses doses it apparantly has nothing to do with it it is more on how he metabolizes it! just a note for my ds we need to take it 7 days a week because stability is best for him he would get very moody and depressed up to 2 days after not taking it (contrary to what is beleived) I've also noticed it when he skips a dose if he is sickhe will be ok that same day but the next day watch out!......I thought I would mention that whatever works for you child...

Thanks for the notes. The doctor did recommend upping the dosage to 27mg which we did over the weekend. It's better but there's still issues. He still gets so angry and emotional. I think he may be going through a growth spurt because I keep waiting for the appetite loss but he's been ravenously hungry night and day for a couple weeks now. He even woke up at 3:30am Saturday night because he was hungry and he's eating at regular meal times too. Maybe his metabolism is just whacked out right now. I got so excited about his progress when we started the meds in December I'm anxious to make sure we keep it up and it's hard to stay patient through these "adjustment" periods!
Thanks for the input! Shannon
