Honey is on 5 mg of Adderall XR. I love it, except that it is not working long enough. We are seeing the doc next week and I want to know if anyone has any suggestion on what else has worked for you. The other problem is that he cannot swallow a pill, so strattera is out. I have heard that ritalin is very small, (like I could hide it in applesauce and he wouldn't even know it was there) and can be taken with other meds. Is regular Adderall better? Does he maybe need a bigger dose, he weighs 42 lbs. I just want to be able to ask the right questions when she makes a suggestion of what to try or try next. I hate it when I think of the question after I get home from the appointment. thanks lots...Becky

sd has been on regular adderall and adderall xr (although much higher doses)... What I would do is express to the dr, that it is working but just not all day... Maybe even ask about giving an additional adderall 5 mg at 3:00 or so?? Although with "honeys" not sleeping dilemma last night not sure that would be the best option... Your dr should be able to address your concerns...
Unfortuantly every child is so different, you sometimes have to "play" with the mg and dosage a bit... Good luck at the appt..

I'm not sure that Adderall dosing is weight-based, but for comparison, my 6 yo goes up and down from 42-45 lbs. and takes 7.5 mgs regular--5 mgs. in the morning and 2.5 at lunch. If I forget the second pill and it gets past 1:30, I have to skip it or he'd never sleep.
I'm a big proponent of the regular formula over the XR, but that's because my son got sooooo emotional/out of control when we tried the extended version. I know it works for others just fine.
I found that the XR taken at 8 am wore off between 3:30-4:00. The two doses of the regular version take him through the same time.

MomA- after reading your post I assume that adderall xr is NOT by weight... Sd barely holds at 40lbs and is on adderall xr 30 mg, plus an additional 10 mg in the afternoon.. But I have been told sd's case is an extreme case of adhd, mixed with autism.. Good luck

I have the same problem. On school days he gets it at 6:30 AM and it wears off sometime on the bus ride home. On non-school days he doesn't get it until10:00 AM (because that is about the time I want to run away)and is worn off by 6PM. I did not know Adderall is not wieght based. More to think about.

Katie had the same trouble with Ritalin, she was literally bouncing off the walls after two hours. Sometimes extended release just doesn't extend very long.
