when your child is home sick with fever do you give meds?

Good Question Crill Mom ! .... Hmmmmm....
Two thoughts on this. Firstly anything with a decongestant in it (including cough medicine and cold remedies) should NOT be given with stimulants.... Our pharmacist is always very clear on this ... so if you are finding decongestants (in any form) necessary then from what I understand they should be given alone and without stims. (Are we talking about stims here by the way or about Strattera or something else?)
HOWEVER, if you are not giving your child decongestants whilst ill, then I would think this would vary from person to person whether to continue with meds at this point ..... I think I personally would swing towards NOT giving meds because if my son is ill all he wants to do is sleep... and the stims could prevent him from doing this ..... (Again this comment too is really only applicable to the stims!) ....
I think I would be inclined to drop the meds for a day and see how your child is ... but if you feel you need to reintroduce them the next day then go for it! ....
However, if the meds you are talking about are not stims then hopefully others will know more !!

For me it would depend on the situation. A definate no if he was sick to his stomach. For a fever it would depend on how he was acting. If he was down and sleepy and calm I wouldn't give them to him but if he was very active, I would in hopes of getting him to calm down and hopefully rest.

hi all I was talking about stimulants. I haven't given my son his concerta and he is doing fine. just watching tv and talking to me  ! I am giving him a decongestant so good advice about not mixing with stim , I didn't know that. He is a little bouncy without the stims but for one day I don't think it's a big deal. Thanks for your replies. |

My kids both had that nasty flu the week before last. Kat didn't take her Focalin until the day or two before she went back to school. Mikie was only down and out for like a day at most so daddy gave all his meds. I too was sick along with the kids so not sure if he got all the meds or just his morning dose.
I think if the kid is bouncing off the walls and won't sit still and lay down than they should have their meds. He was so ready to go to school but he had to be fever free for a full 24hours so that drove him nuts.
