My daughter is requesting to stop taking Strattera. I am thinking about doing so, because although I see a calmer child throughout the day, I don't see the attention span she had on Ritalin. This is all such a confusing thing to figurre out. (See post in behavior titled "So confused"). She complains of it bothering her stomach and all changes I see in her have been since switching to this med. My question is, if the doc aggrees and we get her back to Ritalin LA, how do you stop the Strattera? Do you wean off of it? Seems I read somehwere you can't quit this stuff cold turkey. How do I go about this? Anyone know?

When I stopped Michael's Straterra, we went cold turkey from 50 mg. to 0 overnight. He did just fine, and I think it took a few days before he really got a little hyper. Millermom has her own proboard sight for meds, I would suggest checking things out with her over there. You know she is the unofficial authority on Strat!
BTW, Michael is 13, 8th grade and going through the beginnings of puberty too. It is such a tough decision about meds at this point. He had severe debilitating migraines that the doc thought were possibly caused by the Strat. I am not sure if they were caused by strat. but he hasn't had any since we quit. I think the school environment was stressing him, and now we have a decent IEP in place. His grades are up from F's and D's to B's. So I am reluctant to put all the blame on the meds!
Either way, I would check with Millermom on this subject! She's the boss in my opinion!!!

Thanks Laurie. I remembered about her site yesterday and did go there and post. She said the same as you, you can quit cold turkey. I also read on her post and Mayleng mentioned it as well about adding a stimulant back as a daytime dose for her attention, and bumping the Strat down to nights so she'll sleep thru any bad side effects but we'll keep getting the good benefits we see from it. I have a call into her doctor and we'll discuss our options. I appreciate your response! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
