Our psychiatrist just came back from a docs conference where everyone was apparently in love with prescribing Ritalin LA and couldn't believe she wasn't using it. (The love was all about Concerta a few years ago, wasn't it?)Anyone here have any experience with Ritalin LA ? It's supposed to last 8 hours, so given the drug companies' usual exaggeration, I'd assume 6 to 6 1/2 hours would be the reality--since my daughter has phys ed. last period at middle school, we could probably just get by with it.

My daughter took Ritalin LA quite sometime before switching to Strattera. She did very well on it, I just switched her because I wanted to try a non-stimulant. My experience with it was it lasted about ten hours. It all just depends on how fast a metabolizer your child is. Hope this helps you! -------------------------- Christy

My son is on Ritalin LA. It lasts about 7 hours with him. I also have him on Strattera, its helping him with his rebound and evening agression.
I do like the Ritalin LA - just wish it lasted 24 hours!

Thanks for your responses. Hard for me top guess how she'll metabolize the med. She was on Adderall XR for a year, but it stopped working, even at a high dose, though it did last all school day when it was working. Now that raises another question--how bad was the rebound, if any, coming off the Ritalin LA? (I have visions of the child from he** arriving home from school.) Did you need a supplemental dose of regular Ritalin to get through homework (my 12-year old has tons of it to do when she gets home)? Thanks again!

My son is eight and is on Ritalin LA, Focalin, Clonidine, and Risperdal. The Ritilin LA only lasts 3 1/2 - 4 hours. He has a wild metabolism...none of the meds last very long, but if they aren't a "long acting" type, the regular meds only last about 2 hours. That's a nightmare. We tried Concerta and Strattera, and with both, it was as if he was on NO meds. NOT fun.!

My son probably should have a supplemental dose of Ritalin to get him through homework. That is definitely an issue with the Ritalin LA for me. When I tried to give him Ritalin, he just was very cranky the whole afternoon. As I mentioned I started strattera, i'm kind of hoping once I'm through 4-6 weeks that will help with his homework. If it doesn't, I may try concerta, which I haven't tried in a while. I thought I heard concerta lasts longer.
