I just wanted to say that just having a place to browse through like this and see all of you wonderful people and realize that I am not the first nor the last to take this journey through ADHD with my daughter is just awesome!
My Emily started Strattera this last Saturday. Just a starter dose of 10 mg (getting our toes dipped in the pool). I have been worried about taking this step but I'm already hearing positive things from her teachers, therapists and friends. She has begun functioning at a new level for her at school, speech and occupational therapy. Everyone is so pleased with her new found ability to focus and stay on task for 10 minutes. That was our goal for the year and yeah! - I think we've done it.
When I first noticed things were not right enough to have to look into she was just 3 and unable to speak that could be understood. She had issues with walking, motor skills, social skills, etc. My pediatrician expressed concern about autism (that will scare a mom). We started out with speech therapy and placing her in preschool and saw fast progress. This summer we had her tested since she finally turned 5. We waited hoping communication skills and age would help make testing more successful.
She was diagnosed with ADHD (heavy on the Hyper) which honestly came as a shock to all of us. We all expected a diagnosis of Asbergers. I fought with this diagnosis in my head for several months before finally accepting the possibility and looking into medication. That courage came from you guys and your wonderful children.
My Emily is still my Emily only now she's finally getting to access all of those smarts she has inside of her. I'm so happy I'm crying! Soon I'll go back to the pediatrician to talk about upping the dose a bit. She loses her 'magic time' about 7:00 pm which is hurting her play time with the girl next door. I can tell she's struggling with it and isn't happy so we'll see if we can help her with that.
Thanks all of you....this community is a life saver and an inspiration for me.
