I have heard of this patch. I know of a boy that is using it and it seems to be helping him a great deal. The only thing is that since it is new, will the insurance company pay for it?

This is really interesting!! .... Mind you the very first thing that struck me was would my son prefer to have a patch stuck to his behind each and every day OR take one pill every morning? .... and I had to come to the conclusion the pill was the better option!! ... BUT this is still an interesting concept!! (I notice that the side effects are pretty much as per the pill)....

AnneM - you made me laugh - that is the first thing I thought of too. The second thing I thougt of - knowing how DS is constantly scratching himself - especially around the waist and back - would it even make it all day?
It sounds really cool, though. And I'm sure DS would prefer it over taking that capsule.
But I am remembering this summer in Belgium (during their horrific heat wave - they nver get that heat so there is nothing airconditioned). My sister has her hormone patch - she went through a whole box on our 3 week trip because it was so humid - the darn thing wouldn't stay on. Now if my 40 year-old sister can't keep her patch on - will my itchy, wiggly son? (Granted it was humid - but the child is so darn sensitive he can't keep a band-aid on for long).
Well - you never know! Maybe the idea of keeping it on and not having to swallow the capsule is enough of an insentive.
Interesting! Thanks, Jenn!

I am waiting with baited breath for a patch to be available!!! My youngest is hell on wheels in the morning until meds kick in. I can't wait for a patch so she can wake up already focused and in control. I hadn't thought about the possibility of her taking it (or scratching it) off. Please let it be available soon while I still have some hair on my head!

Just FYI:
The article states positive Phase 3 results. There are 3 phases of clinical (human) testing for pharmaceuticals. Phase 3 is in large, target populations. However, according to FDA guidelines, the company must provide 2 well-controlled Phase 3 studies to support their claim before they can file for approval to market the drug. While these results sound great, it may be years before this product is approved and ready to market here in the US.
Given that caveat, they are using an approved drug (methylphenidate), so it is probably only the delivery system (the patch) that requires approval. That may mean a shorter timeline to market, but I'm not sure. No one can say when they'll apply and how long the FDA will take to approve it, if they do. I think this is a likely product, but I wouldn't hold my breath for it to be available this year or within a short amount of time.

I look forward to it hitting the market but once it's there I'll probably be just as cautious as I am with any new med. We're waiting for more information on Strattera before we even think about it.
If other treatments don't work that's much more incentive to try something new. Right now other treatments work so I'm not anxious to rock the boat.
