Hello, my son is 3 yrs 4 mo. he is currently taking Ritalin LA 30 mg for ADHD. He also has Sensory Intergration Disorder and Behavioral issues... mainly really bad tantrums when he doesn't get what he wants... so we have him taking 3/4 of tablet in the evening b4 bedtime of Risperdal. The Risperdal made him too tired to take this in the morning. He is still having these tantrums, they seem to be emotional tantrums all along even w/o the risperdal... what can I do he is getting too big for me to keep using a stroller???

My daughter took Risperdal for an extended period. She experienced drowsiness as well, but it passed, and it definitely dampened her tantrums. Perhaps with a bit more time, your son would adapt to Risperdal in the same way.

3/4 tablet of what mg?? And how long has he been on it?? Sd8 is on clonodine (which is similar I believe, both are antipsychotic drugs), I am going to have it upped hopefully on the 4th when we go back in... She takes 1/2 of a .10 mg pill at night... I am not seeing the improvement with her violent outbreaks that I wanted... I asked the psychologist about risperdal, and she suggested we give the clonodine a try first... It may be time for a dosage change?? Or if it hasnt been too long, wait and see (I know the waiting game stinks!!)... Also did the emotional tantrums start with the ritalin LA?? I dont know alot about that one, I was just curious... Also curious if your son had to have a ekg done before the risperdal?? Sd did have to have it done before the clonodine... Good luck I hope something works out soon, those tantrums can just be horrible BTDT cat

Our daughter and foster daughter are both on risperdal for bedtime. It helps them sleep and keep just enough of an edge to curb behaviors. The pills start at 1 mg and go as high as 3mg pills. But there is one draw back for long term useage. In females it will stunt the puberty gene and delay things. Our FD has not started her periods yet (she's 17) due to being on risperdal so long, she is also very flat chested too.

Hi Cat my son has been on Ritalin LA mainly since may, and has helped a great feal with hyperactivity and with the impulsitivity. He was having emotional tantrums way b4 meds, the Ritalin helped some, but just not enough with his tantrums... He has been taking 3/4 tablet that we have to cut a 1 mg tablet of the Risperdal. He has been taking the Risperdal for about 2 weeks now, with a few adjustments in dosages with the Risperdal...What about a mood stabilizer for a 3 yr old, if so does this mean that when one takes a mood stabilizer that they are bipolar? When my son is upset for whatever reason I know why, he doesn't get upset for no reason or just out of the blew, it is usually because he doesn't get his way, going outside, or having a particular item, I always know the reason why my son is upset, he tells me... He also is delayed in speech which does not help with him getting upset...

Just FYI: Clonidine is an antihypertensive. Although it is used "off-label" in many other indications (ADHD, Tourette's syndrome), it is only federally approved to treat high blood pressure.
Risperdal (risperidone) is an antipsychotic approved for treatment of schizophrenia. It is prescribed "off-label" for a variety of psychiatric indications such as mood disorder, bipolar, depression, etc.
