Hi,
I'm new here. Currently my son, 5 years old, is taking 10mg of metadate. I sprinkle it on some pudding and he has no problem taking it. This is the med that my psych presribed him. My son has only been taking meds since oct. 15. Now when I went to his pediatrian, he wants me to switch my son to Concerta. We have tried to make him swallow it but he can't. We tried all the tricks. Does anybody have any suggestions.
Thanks,
Rysmom
p.s. one of the reasons of switching meds is because Metadate is not covered on my plan. And also my ped doctor has seen better results in his patients on concerta.

You may have tried what I am about to suggest then, but here goes...
I used to put the pill in applesauce, it went down easier that way... Also I have seen suggested to have them practice with the mini m&m's once they can get those down they should be able to get a pill down...
Those are things off the top of my head at moment... If I think of more Ill post them.. Good luck

mom2ry~my son is 8 and was prescribed straterra but he couldnt take it either..i have tried everything and anything but he couldnt swallow the pill either..i'm sorry that i'm not of any help here but know that your not alone...i ended up having to switch him to addaral xr because i can open the pill and sprinkle it....some tricks i did do was maybe try a thick milk shake..put the pill on his tongue and have him drink that...or i heard drinking thru a straw helps the pill go down easier...teach him to swallow candy such as m&m's or smarties...while this didnt work with my son i know each child is different..i hope this helps for you

Thanks cat,
Yes I have tried that. Since he knows it is in there he finds it. He says he really wants to swallow it but he just can't. We tried swallowing tic tacs and smaller candies. I told him just to relax. Nothing works.
THanks for your suggestion

Hi!! 5 years old is so young that I am not surprised your little guy is having problems swallowing a pill.... My (now 15 year old) couldn't swallow a pill until he was around 8-9. The problem is also that even if your son DOES learn to swallow the pill - if it isn't EASY for him to do it then he could begin to resent those pills....
My personal feeling on this one is to stick with meds that you can sprinkle etc. for the time being and save the "swallowing" pills for when he is older ... Isn't it a pity that Concerta cannot be split or crushed?? I think this can be a real problem for a lot of younger ones....
GOOD LUCK!!

I'm surprised at your pediatrician, for not taking this into account ... surely he/she has seen this pop up as a problem many times in the past with young children!

Hi. I am new here and am relieved after reading the different post that I am not alone. My son also has been taking Concerta since he was 5. He is 6 now. The only way that he will take a pill is to mix it with a spoonful of ice cream. Just enought for him to swallow all at once. If the pill sticks out in any way he can not do it. Sometimes it has taken 3 or 4 times, but he will get it down. This is the only way he will take his pill. Good Luck. I know what a struggle it is.

I think (although I am not sure what you are trying to say) it is the swearing block... Because when I tried to wright another word for drink, it said thingytail instead of what I had typed... Which was what could be considered a swear word-tail....

IF the metadate is working well, I'd think twice about making a change. I understand the insurance issue, but we had a real nightmare with Concerta in our son (emotional lability, meltdowns, etc. and behavior we'd never before seen). If it works, don't mess with it! I will look up and see if there are other formulas of Concerta available...sorry, nope, only tablets.
If it's any consolation to all of you, many companies are working on liquid or orally disintegrating tablet formulations for these types of meds.
