Hello everyone, I would like to introduce myself. This is my first time to this forum and this web site. My name is Tania I am from Canada. My son is 7 and has officially been diagnosed with ADHD. It has been a very long 4 yrs. since it was suspected that he had ADHD. I have tried for years to get him to improve his behaviour and to understand what was and is happening to my child. It is heartbreaking to watch him fall to pieces all the time and I feel guilty because I become so angry that he doesn't listen or sit still and is unable to do the simplest tasks like "normal" kids. I am excited though that the ball is finally rolling. He is starting meds on Saturday. I know that I am going to get a lot of opinions about putting him on meds but now I don't care I just want what is best for my child. I am glad I found a support page with other parents that have kids with ADHD.

Welcome to the board!! We also had mixed feelings about the medication route, but for sd and in regards to learning it was necessary... It may take a while to get the right med, and dosage for your son... Hang in there, Good luck

Welcome Tania:
You have come to the right place if you are looking for support!!! With us, you do not have to worry about being judged for putting your child on meds. Many of us here have had to struggle with the same decision. I myself went the medication route for a little while, unfortunately it didn't work for son. No one anywhere can knows better that we do at this board what it is like to have a child with ADHD and all that it entails. Soo...with that said....I want to welcome you again to the boards. I hope you find the support, guidance and shoulder to cry on that all of us here have found.

Hi Tania, I am new here also. I am a mother of two wonderful boys. My oldest will be 5 in Nov and the youngest is 4 months. My son was diagnosed a few days ago with ADHD. I was so happy when I found these boards. What a great resource!! I know what you mean about getting angry & frustrated. We started him on meds today and are waiting to see how this med will work. Nive to meet you all! Christine

I'm in Canada too. Our son wasn't diagnosed until he was ten years old -- seven years ago. So there were many years there when we didn't know what the heck was going on. Then he was prescribed medication, but wouldn't take it. So we've struggled along. I think that you have to go with whatever works for you -- medication, behavioural approaches, natural remedies, homeschooling, exericise, etc. I have never cared much what other people have thought. They've never volunteered to be in my place!!

Exactly what I say to myself when I see a fellow shopper looking at me and how I am dealing with an outright bad behavior from sd... LOL I almost told a lady you want to take her home and try to do a better job? ;D
Dh has said if someone kidnapped sd they would bring her back fast!!

Welcome all you new guys to the group. It is great! I too struggled with anger before and after my son was diagnosed. A wonderful counseller my son was seeing said that he treats the whole family as ADHD affects the whole family. Shortly after I got Jake set, I was diagnosed with depression and started on meds myself. The combination of meds and behavior mod has worked great for our whole family. There is light at the end of the tunnel and 2 years ago I never thought we would see it but we have. Everyday is different but we have our son back and our sanity! Life is good. Good luck and God Bless, Sue

Welcome the forums! You will find a lot of support and understanding parents here. I went through a terrible denial stage when Johnathon my 12 yr old was diagnosed. We knew that he had some 'issues',and serious behavior problems, we didn't know what was wrong. But after taking him to the dr for 4 yrs...he diagnosed him with ADHD. Of course it couldn't just be ADD...he had to add the 'H' Our dr didn't tell us exactly what was going on because he couldn't give him meds to help him until he turned 5 and started school. Once we were told about ADHD, medications, brain chemicals, etc...I freaked!! I cried for days! Then once I pulled myself together and saw with my own eyes how calm and happy Johnathon was once he was on meds, everything changed for us. I couldn't believe how intelligent he was. For the first time he could hold a conversation with us, and it was like talking to an adult. I spent most of the time with my mouth hanging open....I will never forget that day. I HATE giving him meds, and I will for the rest of my life. But I always thought to myself 'Would I refuse to give him insullin if he had diabetes? Of course not. We do what we can for our kids, and pray that it's enough.

I have to say a big THANK YOU to you Veronica for making this website happen. I am new to the world of computers, email, and chat rooms. I have two girls ages 9 and soon to be 7. The 9 year old was diagnosed this past summer as ADHD with hyperactivity and impulsivity. Also has ODD. Right now she is on Adderall two times a day, but we may be starting a third dose or raising the amount of the first two doses. My question is this, how do you get the cartoon faces on the posts ? How do you get all the cute things I see on these posts, example, the rolling script, the color text, Thanks again.
