Here's something different! DS, ADD, almost 21, will be going to school in Ireland next semester for junior year abroad. He's on Adderall, Wellbutrin, and Celexa. His psychopharmacologist doesn't want to prescribe for him while in Ireland--she feels she wouldn't be in close enough touch with him. So I am trying to find a psychiatrist over there who knows about ADD and could prescribe for him. Evidently Adderall is not available in Ireland! And he does much better on Adderall than Ritalin. I got a couple of names from his doctor here and called them, but they see younger children so DS is too old for them. I did call the Student Health Services at the university, and they do have a psychiatrist affiliated with them, so maybe this could work. I have to say I am worried about him going so far away. He has trouble making friends, and he's in a kind of fragile balance with his depression. Right now he's thinking that going to Ireland will solve all his problems, but what happens if he has a hard time when he gets there? I can only hope he will stay in good contact with us.... ADD would be difficult enough just by itself, but the psychological problems that can accompany it make life so much harder. Everybody needs friends, especially an ADDer! He's been in therapy, but is still trying to figure out social relationships and why they don't seem to be working for him. It makes me sad to see him struggling. He's handsome and very bright, but lonely. I was able to keep his self-esteem up when he was younger, but now mom is no longer the brightest star in the firmament and he needs others for support and feedback. Anyone else with older ADDers and similar problems? I'd love to hear from you!
