Hi- I am new to the board. Actually never been on one before. My son is 12 and diagnosed with ADHD. He also has anxiety pretty bad. My question to anyone is this- I am homeschooling him for the first time because of his adhd and I am finding him "checking out" after a couple of hours. I can tell when his eyes start to glaze over that he is done listening. Any suggestions? It is very frustrating because I know he needs to know the things that I am trying to teach him. He is free to get up, move around, etc. so I know that I am not making the mistake of expecting too much from him when he is not capable of doing it. I'm trying to find another science and/or social studies book that will excite him more than the ones I am currently using! Thanks for any help that you can offer!

HEY, welcome aboard, and welcome to my world!
I am a homeschooling Mom as well. I live outside Philadelphia, PA.
I am using a virtual academy for school, so I don't do much for selecting the texts... it is an on line school.
I find a lot of times Patrick just plain doesn't work well during "normal" school hours.
We were up until 3 a.m. working on a project though.
When he zones out, I give up. No learning ever happens when he zones. We will either change subjects or call a mental health hour.
Today, he is working with the plumber who is installing my new furnace! What a blessing... it is like having a substitute science teacher for the day! 8 hours of tinkering. The men are actually showing him and allowing him to work WITH them.
E-mail me direct and we can chat any time you need specific ideas.

Hey Keek! Welcome to the board!
I have no info to offer about homeschooling but I am also the mother of a 12 year old ADHDr, so if you ever need to compare notes on the age, feel free to look me up.
Hope you stick around and find the info you're looking for here. This place has been a lifesaver for many.

Again Welcome Home Hey Kaiti, you are two dumb questions behind... try to catch up! My physical therapist told me today that I should go into a job as a stand up comic, because some of my Dumb Questions are too funny!

Thanks for the quick replies. I have looked at the homeschool section and I jotted down alot of links to look up when I get time. I'm planning on sending my son back to school next year, unless we both want to keep homeschooling. So, I'm feeling added pressure to keep up with the curriculum so he doesn't get behind for next year. For social studies, we just can't seem to get into anything good and he s it. If it were up to me, I would study all of the major wars, (I know he'd like that kind of stuff) but this isn't what they're learning in 6th grade. Any feedback?

Keek, try "A History of US" series by Joy Hakim. I think they run about $35 each, but it is really a 2 yr. curriculum if you want my opinion I saw them at the local barnes and noble, so they are fairly easy to get, compared to traditional history textbooks. There are 11 books in the series, written 5-6 grade reading level, short chapters, usually 3 pages each. With lots of pictures and side bars, interesting stories. The author is great with talking through history instead of lecturing about it. It is right in line with our school district US history curriculum, so we are not losing anything by home schooling.
