Anyone got suggestions for which career paths best suit our situation? I don't know which way to go right now. I want to eventually teach school, but until I get my certification (no money to do so at the moment), I need something else to do. Right now I'm a secretary. Been at this place of work since 2001, been doing secretary work since 1997 out of neccessity. Once I started doing it, seems that all anyone thinks I can do.
Anyone with great suggestions?
Thanks!

I think it depends on what you really like to do. I am assuming you are ADHD? if you are ADHD.... teaching would really suit you. Paul has a teacher that is ADHD and it is his favorite class(English).

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Ironically, High School English is my field of choice. Now, if I could just get to there from here .....
Thanks again!

WHAT SHE SAID! I had a paramedic partner who was also a high school physics teacher making his way until he got accepted into medical school. He is a 2nd year med student now at the age of 31 I went from a respiratory therapist to a paramedic to a billing agent to a stay at home HOME SCHOOL mom... I swore when I finished respiratory school that I would NEVER go back to school again... and now I am teaching. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! My son's high school guidance counselor suggested going through the yellow pages looking for job ideas. It seems like a novel approach. But if you are the sort of person who likes to DO,l then there are alot of ideas sitting under your telephone. Let the fingers do the job search!

:)Anything that keeps you busy and keeps you moving. I'm a RN and can get twice as much done because I am moving all the time. do well with the "this is what you do, A, B, C" too. But if the sight of blood makes you pass out, it isn't for you.

I don't like seeing blood on TV shows, but we have come across a few accident scenes, and I am Miss Calm Cool and Collected. ???Just when we pull away from the scene and I have a chance to digest what I just saw :-[not pretty, we may have to pull over Anyhow, I have been working with kids for the past, lets see, well, not counting babysitting at other houses, but professionally-(boy that's a funny word for such low pay )the past 13 1/2 years. I am having a blast. I was working at a private day care at the same time as going to college. Then got a job at another daycare and worked them both and the Morning shift at the before school program here.....well, low and behold, I am still at the before and after school program.....BUT a while ago I lost the dirctor ship because I don't have enough college credits....so my lesson learned.....love your job AND work on college credits. Anyhow, what about like walmart or something? It doesn't seem to be too bad. I know a few people that work at the local one here and they are pretty happy with it.

Kaiti, I have been in YOUR walmart... that town... well... bite my tongue... But I have friends that work in OUR walmart... and I think that you may be right. It seems like it could be fun work! I want to wear the smily costume and be the price slasher... I couldn't work in the fitting room... someone might behave like you... or me... and then I would join them and get fired ;D

the career that suits me best is radio, more specifically what i do, i do a 2 hour air shift, not long granted but thats great for me, i get worried rading the news and ill be a long long way off and i am always worried i will start saying what i am thinking while i am doing the news, also its fast paced, i am in traffic, for those not in the business traffic is the department that takes care of the loggs and commercials its my job to record or make sure the commercials are recorded, then i have to schedual them on our log for the dj's to play. dosent sound hard untill you figure, and this is the kicker we are a 2200 watt station and we usually bill between 70-90 thousand dollars a month and thats right i didnt leave out any zeros on the wattage that 22 100watt lightbulbs. so thats alot of commercials and anyone who has ever dealt with sales stalf know how hard they are to deal with, you have to teach them on a weekly basis how to use the phones and fax machine, and how to use a phone book, stuff like that, so its fast paced and i get to teach daniel

Honestly - I think the career that suits us best is the one that taps into our passions - if we are lucky enough to find it - AND something that keeps us from getting bored. For some of us we find it quickly and for others it takes a much longer time. I was/am a graphics artist which is something that I love - it is creative/unstructured/busy and works on a project by project basis so when one project is finished I can quickly turn to another project . . . keeping my interest going! I have been doing this since my mid twenties so I am lucky that I "found" this career early on. My husband went through many jobs - from various business jobs/sales/business development - all of which he did very well - but he grew easily restless. About 3 years ago he started building furniture as a hobby. Now he owns his own company in which he builds custom furniture, does custom carpentry, remodeling, and sometimes works as the general contractor building new hosues . . . again - something that he loves, that taps into his creativity . . . and is a project by project job so that, as with me, he can hyperfocus on the project and then when it is finished he gets to go on to something new!!!
But again - I think it is all based on our interests. I could never be a teacher because I prefer to be autonomous. but if that is something that you love that I think it is perfect. My adhd sister owns and runs a very successful sushi restaurant with her husband. She loves it and it is perfect for her - it would KILL me. I think we all need a certain amount of pressure but I think that is also individual. Dealing with the pressure of getting some of the projects done works well for me. The pressure of having to teach a class or speak on the radio (with my social anxiety) would KILL me. For my sister - the pressure for getting one of my projects done would kill her. I personally think that us adhders can do anything - more than most - but we also can't bear boredom or having to work a job we dislike more than most - making it more difficult for us to find success and happiness. But when we do - we really do!!!
