My son has been off medication for over a month now. He was on concerta for adhd. He is doing very well and doesn't seem much different off meds then on. I would like to try sending him to school without meds and see how he does, he also would like to try. My question is do I let the school know. He is starting middle school so for the most part none of these teachers know him. Should I let the guidence counsler know, principal. dean etc. In a way I do not want to let them know because I feel they will be looking for things that might not necessarily be there, but if I do tell at least if things do go badly they have a heads up. Any thoughts?

In some ways this is a tough one. I understand your concern though.
I think I might let him try without meds but with the understanding if it doesn't work he may have to go back on them.
School is very demanding and structured...he might have a tough time of it.
As far as telling anyone I think I might tell the councellor. If your son has any problems that would be the first person he would see. Your son is old enough to tell the councellor what is going on.
Good Luck....LINDA

I agree with Linda...it's always a toughie trying to decide whether to tell the teachers. I tend to agree with you though that by telling them it will only make them look for "bad" things. Middle school is a big transition though (I speak from experience) and is a lot more structured than elementary so just let your son know that although y'all are doing a little experimenting, be prepared to accept it may not be time and go back to meds IF needed.
I wish you lots of success with this! It would be great not to mention inspirational to see him "go it alone"! Keep us posted please.

Good point Linda, make sure your son knows that if things start getting tough, the councilor is there to help with the school end of things. (As well as the parents) Miles

Good Luck Cheermom ... I agree totally with the others ... I would keep an "open" mind and if he succeeds we will all be celebrating with you ... if he doesn't then that is fine too and you will simply be back to where you were ... GOOD GOOD LUCK..

Go ahead and give him to try I hope it´ll work for him. I agree that I would tell the councellor too, then someone would know if thing´s wont work for him...
