This is another really good way to help you child with school problems. If there is a class where things heat up due to aggravation, for what ever reason, by the learner or the teacher that becomes an impass, the counselor is a good place to send the child. The child can remove themselves also if they feel they need to stop a confrontation before it begins. One rule has to be is that if the child goes to the counselor's office they can't call home, try to pleed a case against the teacher, or stop working on the days work. This can be a good thing for the teacher and the learner. The next time they meet it can be all in the past, because the anger was stopped before bad feelings could be established. Sometimes people need a break from each other to get over things. It is important to know each time they are leaving a class so you can make sure the work is getting done and that it doesn't become just a place to go to get out of class.

We do this at our school...and believe it or not sometimes students and teachers butt heads. I agree with what Kaiti and George are saying. The best thing I can do for a child is to resolve the problem appropriately....then tell the child...all right now...we are starting over with a clean slate

???Been doing a little more thinking, what do they do with the kids that hurry so quick the the work is sloppy, if not incorrect? Or is it a "creative" writing time, where the kids write what ever they want Would they rather the kids be sloppy and wrong than half way neat and correct? ???Just a question I thought about. Half the kids hurry so that they can play with thiie friends, while the other half are very precise and want to get it done neatly because the parents or teacher would make them do it over. Great Job Bub for getting the work done

Kaiti....In Jacob's class if the writing is sloppy no matter what the reason....they keep at it until the teacher is satisfied.
In J's case he is always in a hurry but I have seen really good work on his part. IF HE TAKES HIS TIME!!!

I agree that you should push for him to have center time at least a couple times a week. If the subject before center time is one that he understands quickly, they should let him by with a reduced assignment. If it is something he has difficulties in, then the extra effort on his work is at least for a good cause.

I agree with Trid - don't accept "normal" from the OT as the end of it. My son doesn't have an OT problem - he has a written language processing problem (getting the ideas from his head to his hand). He also has decoding problems (can't sound out new words), and summarization problems (can't pick out key pieces in a written selection, but can comprehend the whole thing). Insist on more testing, and get a 504 that allows him to break his work up into shorter sections and allow some center time in between.
Good luck. Kris
