I work at my childs school. I am a "hall monitor". I have been there for 3 years and know most of the kids. Most of the time the problems there are things like the kids not following directions and an occasional fight. Today was a bit different.
One of the 5th grade boys was sitting at his locker at the end of the hall. I walk by several times every morning. Usually he doesnt say much to me. Today he said "I wish we could have guns at school. I would shoot all of the teachers." I told the principal as soon as I saw her at about 8:50. This boy did not get called down to the office until it was almost time to go home, and it seemed he only got called down because something else was happening. Then, the only result was a 1 day suspension.
What do you think? Is this all he should have, or should the principal have taken this a bit more seriously?

We have security officers that will go to elementary schools. I think an officer should have been called and the boy talked to. Even if he was just fooling around and didn't mean it...it was not an appropriate thing to say.

Oh YIKES!! I agree with Linda this was so inappropriate and potentially scary that someone should have a chat with this boy !! How old was the boy ? It sounds to me that he may have a lot going on in that young mind of his!! ... Oh I HOPE someone talks to him ... SOON !!

I am guessing that he is probably about 11 being in the fifth grade. You hear so much if you work in a school...it is unbelievable

I am not sure how old he is. He seems to have already hit puberty, but so have half of the kids in 4th and 5th grade. The principal did talk to him and she called him parent and told them what happened. The police know where we are. The school I am at has the behavior disorder kids, so the cops get called a few times a year.

Just to show you what else is going on in the area (within 30 miles) here are a few news reports on the subject.
From Thursday: The Illinois high school student charged with writing other death threats on the bathroom wall is suspended and faces an expulsion hearing this week. Police say 18-year-old Zachary Fenton has confessed to writing the threat on a boy's restroom stall at Mount Olive High School, saying he would return on Monday, May 9th with a gun, and kill 26 people. The campus will remain on police lockdown the rest of the school year, and everyone will be searched. Fenton is charged with destruction of school property but more charges could follow. He says it was just a joke.
From Friday: A 16-year-old girl is in trouble with the law for allegedly making a threat at her St. Peters high school. It caused students to skip classes on Monday, and it worried parents. The principal at Fort Zumwalt South High School says the teenager admitted to writing the threat so she could get attention. She got that and a whole lot more. On Thursday, a note written in lipstick threatening violence with a gun on this date was found on the girl's bathroom wall. The principal says it turns out the girl who admitted writing it did it because she craved attention. The threat caused police to put four extra officers on the school grounds and other measures to step up security were also added. Still close to 100 students skipped school anyway. The girl has been suspended. Plus she's in trouble with the law. St. Peters police says she's been referred to juvenile court for making a terrorist threat and institutional vandalism. They say she made a very bad mistake at the very least. School officials say they were able to quickly narrow down a list of suspects by determining who was in class and where on the date the note was found. The principal says the girl is very remorseful and that the girl never intended to harm anyone. He says she simply wrote the note so she could find it first and get attention.

kurs10b ... this is definitely sobering reading! ... The "theme" that worries me throughout both of these stories and the one about the younger child is the pre-occupation with guns!! Yes admittedly the gun law in the US is totally different from that in the UK and I am just "NOT" going into the rights or wrongs of that one!! .... but the 'repeating theme' of "guns and shooting" is really disturbing even IF the children concerned were making a "cry for attention"!! ..

There was also 1 more threat a few days ago similar to the first where there was a threat written on the bathroom wall of a highschool. Again, not that far away. I guess it is that time of year. The kids figure they can get out of school early or something. It is scary though with all of the kids that have come in with guns and did shoot up the place.
