One of my courses this semester is on Tolstoy & Dostoevsky. We have to read War and Peace and The Brothers Karamazov.
We're required to write 4 1-3 page critical essays on them (2 on each). Basically, we take someone else's literary criticism, summarize it and comment on it.
I've managed to get mine knocked down to 3, with one twice as long, as it's a looooong criticism. Since getting started is generally my big problem, I figure that would work better.
We also have one 10-15 page paper towards the end of the semester. We can do it on some aspect of characterization, style, or content. I'm guessing I'll do either the one on women or the one on sexuality (marriage and children). Those should be the easiest ones to figure out.
I think I'll be recruiting friends to help me get started writing. At least the prof requires the topic and outline and the rough draft at different times leading up to when the paper is actually due. That should make life much easier for me.
This is the class I'm really worried about for this semester.

This reminds me of the old 'Get Smart' show where Max holds up a copy of 'War and Peace' in a fight to protect himself and 99 asks why he's doing that. Max says 'Nobody gets through 'war and peace'...

Alla, good luck with the papers.
If you have any questions, I'm sure we can be blunt enough to tell you ;D
As far as War and Peace, I thought that was supposed to keep the coffee table from elevating ;D

Actually, I already had both, but not in the correct editions. It's worth it to buy the same edition everyone else will have, just so everyone is on the same page (literally!).

Alla:
I read The Brothers Karamozov as an adult, after college, because I felt my degree in Literature was sorely lacking in the Russian novelists. I have never tried W&P. I recall the Brothers as being quite existentialist in some respects. I had to push myself to get through it. Good luck.
I might be able to help you with the papers. I was a Lit major and am now a professional writer (although not fiction). Of course, my speed right now is more on the lines of Judy Blume novels (ie, Double Fudge) - fourth grade. I just finished a project on that book! LOL ;D
Good luck! Kris

My degree was Russian Language and Literature and while it was 22 years ago I do remember that the literature was very depressing. Russians like stories with unhappy endings, makes them feel like they don't have it so bad. ;D

We had a content quiz today. I completely missed one of the characters (who I STILL haven't figured out who she is) and missed part of another one because the fact that the prof insists on calling one of the characters by a name other than the one in the book and I keep thinking of another story. In other news, I haven't managed to fall behind in any of my other classes yet!

Right now we live in San Antonio, but I was raised in Nebraska, was in the army for 4 years and lived in Colorado and Maryland in the past.

Hehe. I've never lived outside of Texas. I went to Trinity for 2 years, before I decided that that wasn't working.

Ok, so now that we have more information...the small papers are more like full-sentence outlines. Yay! That makes life sooooo much easier. I'm supposed to do my presentation on Tuesday, the 15th.

It just keeps getting better. Instead of having to do 2 shorts on Tolstoy and 2 shorts on Dostoevsky, we just have to do 2 on 1 and 1 on the other. Since mine counts as 2, that means I only have one more left to do! Yay!
