I have not had the pleasure of learning the "new math" yet, but I will shortly. I don't understand it, I thought math was just plain old math??

(ON MY SOAPBOX ALSO) My ss has homework pages 4 nights a week and he is in kindergarten. I have considered putting him on an IEP just not to have to do major battle on most evenings. He goes to school for a very long time and then has to come home and do more. I am in college for elementary education and don't agree with it. I understand more in 1st grade and up, but at this age it is too much. IMHO, it is all about scores and numbers so that the school can look good and get more money. Math has definitely changed. I worked in a school for an internship and the teacher's were going crazy trying to implement a new math program that was doing algebra in the 1st grade. According to Piaget (child psychologist extroidinare) ;D children do not have the reasoning to start these types of problems this early. I will say though, someone, somewhere is making big bucks at our children's expense.
