my personal opinion is that what they teach, how they teach and treat our kids is soooo much more important than how they dress, within reason. i guess the within reason part is where people sometimes have differences of opinion. i'm not sure if there is a state wide policy in IL or not. i know that our schools are not air conditioned as a whole. some rooms are, some areas are but not the entire school system. with that, i think we all have to make certain allowances for comfortable dress. yes, they are on their feet alot and teachers often have things spilled on their garments or shoes. especially those who teach younger kids. many have to go outside for playground duty in lots of different weather. In chicago, that could be all in one day! Many teachers around here do make decent money, at least the ones who've been here a long time. but the younger one are just trying to get out on their own, paying off school loans and any number of other things that we know nothing about. i guess i just don't look at it as a huge deal unless it becomes inappropriate. the sort of person they are, the sort of teacher they are and how they treat my kid is my top priority. kt

IL. sounds like MI. On any given day the weather can change dramatically. We don't have air in our public schools either...and the last 2 weeks of this school year it was HOT!!!!

Actually Anne the old "rubber" flip-flops are what I'm referring to as what is so popular with our teens here! lol Dressy flip-flops we are now calling sandals. hehe Now this IS interesting because a "sandal" to us has a "back-strap" ...if it doesn't have a back strap then it isn't a sandal its a flip flop!! ;D But what I am finding particularly interesting is that we have been told at work that we CAN wear sandals but we CANNOT wear flip flops!! ... So I am wondering whether this is some argument I and my colleagues can put up here by saying "THESE aren't flip flops - they are SANDALS!" ;D ;D

i always thought flip flops were those, usually cheap, plastic things with the one thing between the toes. something you might wear to the pool because you could get them wet. i always think anything else is a sandal. your toes show, you don't typically wear socks, although some do! i just bought my first pair of birkenstocks because i have so much trouble with my feet. i'd hate to think of something this expensive as flip flops! karen

Well, here the cheap rubber "thongs" are simply called flip-flops. If it is a thong shoe, yet made with leather or suede or some non-rubber material and it is " Dressy" it is called a sandal, or a thong sandal. lol

The reason for no flip flops at our school has to do with safety. The students arent supposed to wear any shoes without a strap at the back. In grade school they run around and strapless shoes fall off easily, and if you arent careful, the back can flip under and you can trip. They are also too darn noisy. Flap, flap, flap, flap

I have seen kids at the grade school here step on the back of the flip flop of the kid in line in front of them and then two people fall ..one over the other.. can anybody remember when girls had to wear pattent leather shoes to school...and boys dress shoes..then we all changed into gym shoes for gym class. Of course the shoes all looked fine as we (girls) all had to wear dresses (no knees visible) no jeans (girls didnt wear them at all) and no shorts at school. I do think that teachers should dress respectable, mature (not like a student), and a certian professional demeanor should be maintained. When teachers and students dress alike it can be distracting and a certain sense of respect can be lost. Young guys have a hard enough timeconcentrating with females students dressed the way they do...Imagine a full grown adult woman dressed like a teenager...and has anyone noticed that stuident teacher relationships seem to happen more than when we were kids? On the other hand office personnel should be cut a bit of slack as they are not always in contact with students nor are they standing up in front of a class commanding the attention of twnety or more kids at one time.

OMG, Mikey loves to sing Another Brick in the wall ;DI wonder why ;D ;D ;D Anyhow, we aren't supposed to wear flip-flops......safety reasons, like if a kid gets hurt how are you going to run for them safely type of thing. Then again, I actually paid $10 for a decent pair of nice flip-flops and the dang puppy ate the beads off it
