I would defininitely get the school's retention policy in writing, since this could be one of those "unwritten" rules that they haven't been challenged on. Also, find out if the school can retain your child without your consent. As Christie said, I also wouldn't leave my child in a school where we already knew she wouldn't pass to the next grade. It might be a good idea to discuss this with the superintendent, again because this may not be policy, it's just what they do. The principal may have been trying to help, but unless there's a problem with your son it's none of his darn business what meds he's on if any.
Another thing to consider is if the school has already labeled your son as someone who will be repeating a grade they may not be as willing to work with him on what he needs to learn, since he can pick it up next year just as well.
Hope everything works out for you. Mary

In texas there is a law it is illegal for the principal to do what he did!!!
Texas HB 1406
School district employee may not recommend student use a psychotropic drug or have a psychiatric evaluation, or use refusal by a parent to consent to administration of a psychotropic drug or psychiatric evaluation for a student as grounds for prohibiting the child from attending class or a school-related activity.
Through both the House and Senate and sent to the Governor 6/03/03
Go get em!!! Sorry I did not see your message earlier!!

shelly75964, I am curious. Did you ever find out about the two failing grades. Does that actually mean that your son failed the whole grade or just that grading period.
If it truly does mean that he failed the year, I think that rule is unconscionable.
Good luck.

I did find out that she meant that if a child has two failing grades in the same class, he will fail. Like...if he made a 62 in Social Studies on one report card and was not able to bring that grade up the next time report cards came out then he would fail, or have to be in summer school. She really should have made herself a little clearer when she made that statement (I think)

She really should have made herself a little clearer when she made that statement (I think) No kidding! I believe I would have told her that so that she understood what she put you and your son through. Maybe if she knows she can be 100% clear with the next parent in your boat. Well, I am glad that your son caught a break ;D Good luck on pulling the grades up. It's possible, but takes a lot of work as I am sure you know. You and your son are in my thoughts and prayers.
