I just started a new hobby yesterday. I am teaching myself how to sew. I am really proud of myself. My dad refuse to let us learn how to when we were kids b/c he said women no longer need to know how to do that. He is very big into Women's Rights.
I bought a tiny little sewing maching yesterday. My parents gave us money for Christmas and they make a rule that if any of us kids pay bills with it they won't give it to us anymore. Then they ask for weeks and weeks what we bought. I guess they want us to get stuff for ourselves. So I went out and bought the sewing maching. (I can't want to hear my dad's response to that one!)
I already mabe a really cute set of panel curtains to put in place of my folding closet doors in my bedroom. The former tenents here painted the doors black and they are runied. Now our room looks really cute. I think this is going to be the perfect hobby for me. I am already invisioning the summer clothes I am going to make for my kids.
It probably sounds stupid, but I think this is just what I needed. I am giving myself a sense of accomplishment. I should've learned how to do this years ago! ;D

You go girl!! For those of us that are stay at home because we don't have a choice, it's nice to have something that makes us happy and gives us that sense of accomplishment.
I know this isn't a hobby but I recently went back to school and I feel incredible about myself. I haven't felt this way in soooo long. I finally get to do something for myself. And I finally feel like I'm accomplishing something in my life(besides dishes, laundry and housekeeping).
Sew away!!!

Honeysmom, sewing is the best thing in the world. I have made all of our curtains, except the nice free ones in the living room. I even have 2 for each window. One for fall and winter, the other for spring and summer. Now, as long as I remember to change them we'll be in good shape. tip #1 remember to buy enough fabric for shrinkage. I usually buy enough to double whatever I plan on, in case I mess up and the store runs out of that fabric. tip#2 wash before anything. I never thought of shrinking, until the nice curtains I made for my son's room shrung after I washed them so now he has a gap about 2 inches above the window sill Good luck and if you need anything, I might be able to help. Danielsmom, Good luck with school. Now the kids can ask you if you have YOUR work done Kaiti

You never know when a hobby will turn into a business. I don't sew but I love to make things (unique lamps, jewelry, earring holders). It turned out that I opened up my own gift shop some years back and also make things for craft shows. My earring holders were featured in 2 mail order magazines and were a big hit. This brought a lot of satisfaction and a few $$$ besides. I no longer have the gift shop but like to do the craft shows when I can.
This may be something to think about as your skills grow.

Danielsmom, I was also going back to school, but I have had to take a leave b/c of moving and trying to get things straight with Honey. If I am lucky I will be able to start in September again when he is in school fulltime. Isn't it strange how much an education means to you after you've "grown up?"
Thanks for the tips Rosyred. I never thought to wash the fabric first. I did buy lots of it though b/c I wasn't exactly sure how to decide how much I needed. Thank goodness Wal-mart had the color I wanted for $1 per yd! Now I have extra to practice on.
Oh Mamma, I didn't know you were a crafty person. Wait, that sounds wrong, but I meant able to do crafts, not shifty! I am going to need lots of practice before anyone wants to buy anything from me, I think at this point they may want to charge me for taking it! But it is fun so I'll keep at it. ;D

I am a SAHM too, but have yet to find a hobby I like besides reading. I wish I was crafty, but I couldn't make the first thing. Wanted to go back to school, but hubby is doing that now. I have to wait until he is done there. (Another couple of years). Then I have to live up to his standards of the dean's list. Maybe I can come up with something. Sometimes I just feel like I have no talent. Oh well! Maybe someday I will come up with something. Good luck with the sewing! Hope you become great at it.

Honeysmom, It is such a shame that your father stifled such a great domestic art as sewing! My father criticized every SAHM enough to make me not desire being one until I had kids myself.
Wash your material in vinegar to preserve the true color. Add 1-2 cups to the wash. You can do this with any clothing or material that you are afraid of bleeding or fading.

Honeysmom sewing is great if you have the time to figure out what to do and place to let thing´s just "hang in loose". I´ve done quite a lot of kid´s clothe´s, although I have a "thump in the midle of my palm"when it come´s to sewing, knitting, etc. (what´s the impression in english to tell that something isnt really your best field , we have this thump-in-the-midle-of-palm-thing) I even made a winter-dress to my god-daughter, some courtan´s as well, Rosyred, dont you just love to watch your own handmade hanging in front of the window, that´s a great feeling Aimee:Reading is great hobby, I´ve desided to recover my jogging-hobby after christmas-time, I feel sick if i dont get my weekly amount of exercise. Another good thing in walking, jogging, skiing is that there is time and space to think, I can actually hear my thought´s ;D Isn´t that great! Marja

Lofo, I think my dad's intentions were good. I am fairly certain that he was trying to let us know we didn't have to be SAHM's we could be whatever we wanted. I don't think it ever occured to him that we may enjoy being moms. And keep in mind my dad is really young, he is only 44. It is not like he is an old guy. Amiee, you will do great at school if you like to read. I like to read too and I was a terrible student in HS, but in college I wanted to go and didn't start unil I was 24 so it made all the difference. I barely passed classes in HS, but I made the High Honors Dean's list last May. An education means so much more to you when you are an adult. You will do great! Finnmom, I never thought of exercising as a hobby. That is one hobby I have to work on. Swimsuit season is going to sneak up on me soon!

In the good old days when I was a SAHM, I read, redecorated, went to Bible study, had lunch with my friends, helped in the snack bar at Katie's school, my house was clean, my checkbook was balanced, I was so organized!
I've been back to work for a year now. My Jack Russell Terrier (ADHD dog) just went tearing through the living room and skated on the newspapers so the neat pile is no longer. Hurricane Kate says she'll take out the garbage "later"(it's 10:15 pm, how much later does she want?), and Hubby is studying in the garage, but I think he's really watching the Sci-Fi Channel. Good thing tomorrow is a holiday, maybe I can get something done!

I think my fish are ADHD, I know that fish have to swim , but swim/eat, even when it's dark is all they do and they really aren't getting any bigger ;D One thng that I have always had on hand was coloring books. NO, Not just the kids disney and pooh, but GOOD colring books. THE KIDS AREN"T ALLOWED TO TOUCH!! I have coloring pencils that I got in college, ok, please don't turn me into the flylady patrol, I still use them. Any how, they are the kind that are water based, so after you color with them, you can take a paint brush over them and turn them into a water color. Almost like paint with water in a sense. Decoupage is always something too. Wood burning, beading, painting, woodworking in general, crocheting, plastic canvas(you know, those cute tissue box covers), needle work, knitting (I finally got rid of about 50 pairs of knitting needles that were given to me from family members that have died since I was the crafty pack rat. Never did pick em up and try) oh, the list can go on. That's just the stuff I have in my craft space. I'll get around to it one of these days ;D Might even finish an afgan I started about 7 yrs ago.
