Son is on his 3rd lesson. I think I have finally convinced him that he needs to do some practicing. I am paying attention so I can help him at home. I should sign up for the class. ;D

My ds has been taking a martial arts class since November, and just loves it. He takes a Korean version called Soo Bahk Doo (sp?). We pay $30 a month and it's once a week for 1/2 hour.
I had long heard that the martial arts are good for helping adhd kids with self discipline and focus, but I don't think I'm really seeing that carry over to other areas. I suppose it might if he spent more time practicing, and we might start that. But, it does give ds something he's good at, and in turn, can feel good about. His teacher is wonderful and really knows how to build up and encourage children. He told me ds has a natural talent for this. I thought he was just being nice (since he knows about the adhd), but I ran into one of the assistant teachers at a park one day. He said ds isn't always "there", but when he is, he's one of the best.
We tried: --tee ball -- disaster, so we didn't even bother to sign him up for pitch ball. It was around this time he got dx'd. --soccer: he enjoyed it but wasn't all that good at it. Loved the running ;D but wasn't really able to follow the game. --gymnastics -- he loved that too, but even on meds was too impulsive on the equipment, and an accident waiting to happen. Also, he's not really built like a gymnast so it wouldn't really be something he could continue for years.
Martial Arts has been a blessing for him. I highly recommend it if you can find an affordable class with teachers who are understanding of adhd (or at least willing to learn about it).

Now that the boys have passed their Junior Black Belt test, we move onward to the Adult Black Belt Program...
I am writing a check today for $5924 to cover the next 2 years for all three to earn their Adult 1st degree Black Belt. That is for "free belts and promotions", extra help if needed, guest passes, curriculum worksheets, and seminar access. And because it is the "Family Plan" I can take classes for free also... except that I known as such a klutz, that they have "suggested" that karate is probably "not" for me!

You deserve to have fun as much as anyone else. It is hard for everyone to do something they aren't used to. You can practice balancing techniques if you need to. Do it for yourself.

Son is doing pretty good in his classes. He loves doing the kicks. This kid is very coordinated and loves sports. If I was willing to put him in other stuff, he would do that too, it just gets too expensive. He would love to do gymnastics too, especially if they would let him do trampoline. He has taught himself to do front and backflips on our trampoline.
Congrats to your kids for getting their Jr Black belt!

After my son got in trouble at school and told the instructor, they wanted to know why or what problems he was having. So, told them all about the ADHD which I swear I told them about when he started. Well, the instructor wanted to see how he was when not on meds, so yesterday I skipped the concerta. Man what a day. Oldest son fell on his arm while rollerblading. ADHD son was caring about the arm and helped older get into the car and stuff. We all had to go to the hospital. We were there for about 2 hours total. After the first 15 minutes, youngest was running up and down the ER, making noises, complaining on how long it was taking etc. Husband finally showed up and got young son and took him home. Oldest kid got his arm splinted (broke both bones in lower arm). I then took youngest to class. He was all over the place, no focus, acting goofy, couldnt remember things that he knows down pat, etc. Instructor got somewhat fed up and asked him if he could focus and do the alphabet backwords. Of course not. No focus. Gave him 2 months to learn it or he would kick him out of class. After class I said do you see why he needs the meds? He said he doesnt need them. Then I pointed out how he was having trouble focusing and stuff and he finally said yeah maybe it does help. I bet him that son would know the alphabet backwords by the following Thursday. He doesnt think son can do it, but I have been quizzing him and he almost has it down. I am going to make sure son knows it by Tuesday. I will prove the instructor that I do know best. ;D ;D
