I am noticing something, the longer I walk the road with my kids.....
My house consists of 4 children <three formally diagnosed> and three adults <two formally diagnosed>. My menu is this : 3 mood d/o and ADHD, one severe mixed type, one ADHD and depressive, and the two undiagnosed parties are ADHD severe mixed type and ADHD and depression.
Is there a possibility of a sister forum here <there may already be one, but I am the ADHD with depression LOL> about bipolar kids with ADHD? I am noticing that the line is getting fuzzier between the diagnoses. There is definitely some overlap and a good deal of misdiagnosis !! Any thoughts on this?
PS: Anyone have a nice, boring quiet life that needs a good home? GIMME!!! LOL!!!

Hey Linda, it wouldn't be difficult to start another sub heading for Bipolar issues... and from what we see here, it would be a reasonably well used heading. Talk through it with the Admin/Mods and see what major heading to put it under. GSD If you find your loving home, can I come too?

LMAO!!!
My life is interesting, I have four kids, three GSDs <dogs>, and my husband, myself and my Dad living with us in a house that will be remodeled to include a few more rooms for us since we are crammed into a three bedroom house currently!
Spring is here and all the mood d/o people are starting to come out of the winter doldrums thankfully! Light plays such a huge part in the mood cycle and the longer days make life a bit more bearable!
Anyone get the Washington Post? This morning's article in the Metro section front page was my life in a nut shell! LOL! Weird when people are int he same boat, you never hear about them till you read about them in the paper <for good or ill resons> It's called "A family's painful journey". Good reading!
Thanks for considering the bp section, there isn't a lot known and the common misconception is that bp can only be diagnosed in the early 20s so there is a huge community who isn't getting a lot of "air time" about things. I mean, who thinks that a bio-chemical d/o just appears at the age of majority??? I mean besides the DSM-IV....... <minor rant>

I understand that statistically around 70% of those with bipolar also have adhd BUT on the other hand only 6% of those with adhd also have bipolar ... So of course this means that there are way more kids out there with adhd and no bipolar than the other way around! ... Either way bipolar is an important subject and although we try to address this in the Common Disorders Section it is not used as often as it potentially could be .... I agree with Linda that some "rewording" might help get this moving ... However, we also don't want to forget the other disorders such as autism, aspergers, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ODD etc ... I think this needs some thought !!...Please keep posting your suggestions and thoughts on this ... we need some help to get this right !!

hi gsdmommy, great to see you back! i address bipolar/mood disorder issues frequently in the now-renamed related disorders section. my ds9 is bipolar/adhd and i have depression. there is a site dedicated to early onset bipolar. it is www.cabf.org. it's good for information and education, but, imho, i found the chat/forum area to be depressing, so i dont utilize it. ask me anything, i have lots of first hand experience w/ mood disorders!!

Yes, yes, please! As the mom of a recently diagnosed bipolar teen, this would be sooo helpful (She has ADD, Asperger's and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, too.)
I've done some "surfing" around--trying to find a bipolar message board similar to this wonderful ADHD board--and there is not much out there. The few I found are not very current. You would be doing a great service to those of us that are affected by this disorder.
Bipolar disorder is being diagnosed more frequently than ever. My 8th grade daughter is friends with a group of nice, popular girls. All eight of them have ADHD and TWO of them are also bipolar. Bipolar disorder is more prevelant than ever, and many of our kids may be diagnosed with it.
Thanks for being willing to help those of us who need this support!

I think bipolar is going to be a little more researched since there is a great deal of information being found out. I didn't know about the related disorders area, missed that one!
I know there are quite a few related disorders and they are very life impacting and no fun to deal with and require specialized knowledge and support........I can empathize with this. In my personal world, I have noticed that bipolar became the prevalent diagnosis. I have noticed also that sometimes the primary dx changes, and things shift around depending on the management.
I hope no one thought that I was trying to change the focus to bipolar, was just trying to float my thoughts across and see what anyone thought :-) I don't want to step on toes.......
ASD, OCD, ODD, CD and a host of other co-morbids are a handful on their own! I wonder when they <the medical community> will be able to give definitive dxs for mental illnesses. Seems to me that something that can be treated with medicines to inhibit reuptake and meds that trigger production and all this would be affecting a measureable, quantifiable condition. Wonder if we'll see that day...........
As far as suggestions, you know I am more than happy to provide any input I can and am willing to help in whatever capacity you need.
I am gonna go clean the house now.......g'night!

GSDMommy !! ... and I promise you that not for one minute did we think you were trying to change the focus to bipolar !! BUT you did highlight something which I hope we have helped to put right by changing the wording to the "Related Disorders" ... I really hope this makes it clearer what this particular section of the board is all about ... because you are so right .. bipolar is becoming bigger (and NO sorry .. let me rephrase that... it is becoming more "recognised" in kids and hence a bigger and more prevalent topic ... ) ... Please let us know what you think of this section of the board ... As you say this is such a HUGE area because there are SO MANY important related disorders and it would be good to see more people there ... adhd is certainly not the ONLY disorder many of our kids have ... and in fact when there is another disorder it can be far more disruptive than adhd/add on its own!!
