Hello -
Where do I begin in getting a diognosis. I have taken the online tests and have an indication for ADD. I have also looked at a lot of symptoms on different web sites and can trace many of them way back to when I was a kid. I even have my report cards from K - 12 and they all say basically the same thing....April is gifted/has great potential, etc. IF ONLY SHE WOULD listen/ stop talking/ pay attention/ etc.
I have read Driven to Distraction and could relate to 90% of it. I even found myself sobbing at parts as I realized someone was finally putting how I feel into words. There could actually be an explanation for how I felt and lived. I also read "I'm not lazy, crazy or stupid".
But where do I start for a diognosis?? Do I go to my regular MD first?? Do I go straight to a Psych who deals with ADD. My insurance will allow me to do either. I would really like to get to the bottom of this, but am unsure what my next step is.
Sorry for the rambling and thanks for the help.

I did fine going to my primary care doctor for diagnosis... I am in the medical field and my doctor listens to me and trusts what I say (I am a paramedic and have taken patients from the office to the hospital in critical condition... so we have a trust built up). Others will tell you to go straight to a neurologist, and others will say go to psychiatry. I think any of them that you feel comfortable with and who will listen is fine. You are not committing yourself permanently to one doctor or one type of doctor either. If you aren't happy with how the doctor listens and treats you, you can keep looking to someone who you can work better with. Don't procrastinate now. This is the key moment for you. GO MAKE THE CALL first thing Monday morning. DONT WAIT! I will check up on you! You won't be the first new member I have harrassed until the appointment is made and then follow up on! We are here for each other, and we act like family! I can be the family nag! Kaiti (rosyred45) is the family ding bat... she asked all the dumb questions long ago... so don't worry about asking anything... if it's dumb... she already asked! (Kaiti and I are friends on line and on the street. I don't always heckle everyone... just her... she's special!) I will check up on you... Laurie

I already wellcomed you on the other thread, but here it goes again: A big welcome to our forum, as trid descriped, we have lot´s of support, compashion and fun in here.
I´d start the dx-path from the one doc you feel comfortable with, if you do trust on your family-doc. then go there and if you´re not happy with him/her you can always change. What ever is the easiest and most comfortable to you. As Trid already said, GO FOR IT, dont hesetate anymore, you need to take the first step and there is no better time than just right now!!!
I´ll keep my thump´s up for you. Keep us updated, please!!

Welcome! I dont know much about adult add/adhd, but I would assume your primary is the best place to start... It is where we started, once the school brought it to our attention there was a problem anyway... Good luck! cat

Thanks for keeping on me!! It is on my "to do" list, but I just haven't gotten to it yet. Story of my life I will do it though!! April NO EXCUSES!!! MOVE IT TO THE TOP of the list. DO IT NOW! BEFORE ANOTHER SCHOOL LESSON IS ASSIGNED! JUST THINK HOW MUCH EASIER THE DAY COULD BE IF YOU ARE SOMEWHAT MORE ORGANIZED! I know that the HS'ing will always mean disorganized house, but everyone will enjoy days better with a happier mom/teacher! You owe it to all of you to make the call!
