Alright, I have been flipping this idea around in my head, and it's a dream of mine that I woul dlove to do, but don' tknow if I could do it. I want to open a bakery :oYeah, I keep having those angels and devils on my shoulders arguing back and forth..... Angel: You love to bake Devil: You'll never make it Angel: Everyone loves what you bake Devil: You don't know where to start Angel: Go to the shop across the street and ask how they got started Devil: Your never goin to make it work I want so much to do something that I can be proud of that I can call mine, but I don't seem to be organized enough to be able to get the lead out. I keep thinking what happens if I fail. That's my biggest fear....that and the health department Does anyone know where I could or should start? I'd appreciate any and all info good or bad, pluses and minuses....EVERYTHING Thanks Kaiti

Kaiti GO FOR IT If that´s what you want, then try it out, if you´ll be a succe´s(as I vote) that´s great, and if not... so life is not over, you´ve tried it, move on. You´ll never get anything if you dont dare, taking a risk is better than just want to but never really try I´ll bet you´ll be great Is there any office for small busine´s, you might get some bisness-loan´s for starter´s, ask someone you know who has a small bisness....

I think the biggest thing, besides me being afraid of failing, is that around here, there isn't anywhere to have a shop. There is an old bakery in town, but that's been boarded up for over 40 years. It's delapitated, but no one really says anything because there's a huge pine tree in the front of it The one place I could possibly have it, doesn't have a kitchen and I don't know about getting all of the stuff together for it. My landlord said to go to the County Chamber of Commerce or something, just to get a feel for what it might be, but that might scare me even more

There is a little old lady about 10 minutes away from my office that opened her own bakery. It is wonderful. We go to her a least once a week. We just call her up and tell her what we want the day before, and she whips it up for us. We have her make the office a tray of cinnamon rolls quite regularly. She also make wonderful cobblers. We have a large kitchen here, so we have potlucks on boss's bithday, thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. We'll have her make us about 4 cobblers for those. Then, on co-workers birthdays, we'll all pitch in a have her bake us brithday cakes. Yum!!
She just bought an small, old, run down house and painted the outside and did a few minor renovations. She closed most fo it off, used one room for storage, turned the living room into a small display/sitting area and then has the kitchen. She put in one of those double ovens. She calls the place "Granny's Goodies".

Y'all are making me HUNGRY! I can smell all the goodies!! Kaiti - if you want it - go for it. Make a plan - research what it would cost for everything. There is a an old building near the railroad tracks in town that house a comic book shop and housed a video store. The video store closed and someone put in a phenomenal kitchen - just redit the inside - and started her own little catering/eatery place. You can put a kitchen in anywhere - you just have to find out the laws - how to do it - permits, etc. and how much it will be - loans and that.

I have been thinking about it all day. THere's where I'll start, a LIST ;D I'm just afraid that I'll get in over my head and ruin my family. That's not very good concidering I tell people to suck it up huh I have been thinking about just starting from my house for now, and build up a little. Do you think that could work? Would I have to have an actual name of a business? OH MAN_____TAXES CRAP.......ok, we'll not say anything to the taxman shhhhhhhh

You definitely should have a name - my husband started his own LLC (it actually wasn't a big deal - paperwork and a nominal fee every year) - you want to make sure that your family is not liable for anything. In this day and age - don't assume that someone isn't going to sue you for any reason.
Also - you will have to check the health codes and all of that to make sure that you can start in your own home. I know that here in CT the kids can't even set up a lemonade stand! One reason is the the health code but there is some other reason - I can't remember what it is but it is business related - for example when I was a child I sold hand painted "pet" rocks to the neighbors for a penny. Can't do that in this state.

It's all about Taxes and all that Bs, I do know that That's one of my concerns, so that my family isn't effected in this sue happy age. I had a friend who died in a car accident 14 yrs ago Sunday, his dad had an electrical repair shop. Even though the guy my friend ran into lived and my friend died, he was going to sue from what I understand. BUT because his-my friends-was all his own, the guy couldn't touch his dad's company worth. We did have a fundraiser a couple years ago, it was a Craft show, we hosted it, and people signed up for tables. Well, the Taxman and his motley crew came around and gave everyone heck about having thier paper work. Talk about pissed, these people were trying to wait on customers and the suits were just being a pain because they couldn't find one thing out of line to fine us for Oh I gotta get some numbers crunched. I wouldn't even know how to charge, since usually I don't think in terms of $/hour or anything.....list lists lists

Boy do I know what you mean. Mike knows that if I start baking, I will not stop until I either run out of space, containers or ingredients. Then I send him to the store for more ingredients anyhow so that's usually not a problem. Then I start thinking it takes money to make money :(I don't have anykind of credit that amounts to anything, We've tried a mortgage company for a house last year, and neither of us had sufficient credit to get one That's pretty much the crossroads of it. Oh I need to stop droning, and procrastinating, and oh this is gonna be a fun day

Just wondering if you've come up with anything? I think it's a great idea and I say go for it, but I know how the money thing can be too. Have you checked into starting out at home? Maybe you could start there and as business increases, you can save your money to open up somewhere else? Let us know if you've thought anymore about it.
