I would be interested to hear about books or movies that seem to be portraying ADHD characters. I have noticed a few:
Envy--(Ben Stiller & Jack Black) Jack Black seems extremely ADHD in this movie. Jack plays a guy that just can't concentrate at work and he gets a ridiculous idea that everyone laughs at and becomes mega wealthy. His friend is a steady Eddie type who keeps telling him how to steadily progress up a logical path. Jack just cannot do it.
School of Rock--again Jack Black. Guy that cannot keep a job and just creatively gets a job as a sub teacher under a false identity. He manages to be a great teacher, but also gets in all sorts of trouble in the process. My favorite line when he's trying to defend himself in front of the PTA "I was touched by the children...and I touched THEM!" Also, when they ask him what his teaching philosophy and he just grasps out of thin air "I believe the children are our future. Um...teach them well and let them lead the way."
Haiku Tunnel--Does it GET anymore ADHD than this? I think it must have been inspired or written by an ADHD person. The guy is a temp who can never get out of bed. He doesn't want to commit to a full-time job b/c of the "politics." He quckly impresses them his first day there, but after that he is given a simple task of mailing some letters and he CANNOT get to it for the ENTIRE movie. He screws it up royal and is berated by his boss. He spills coffee all over the letters, etc. I almost cried while watching it. I have been a temp and done basically all of the above.
On the Road (Jack Keroac)--I think the character, Dean Moriarty is a pretty good sketch of an ADHD'er. His constant need to be driving AND be the driver of the car was insteresting. That's me to a T and one of the things I read about in Driven to Distraction. Driving calms me down.

There is a movie from several years back called "Wild America" that is the true story of the 3 Stouffer brothers, they were all adhd though the movie doesn't go into that. Anyone who has an adhd child will recognize this immediately about the whole family. Marty Stouffer was the man who became famous for the wild life tv series back in the 60's. This is a good family movie that is worth seeing.
What about "Malcolm in the Middle"? Now you all know this family is adhd and a lot more! LOL this is one of my favorites.

sorry, we don't go to movies and I don't get enough of a chance to watch too much TV at night. Hubby pretty much commanderes the TV. BUT he's more along the add type, he'll get hyper every once in a while, but, anything that has to do with star trek, space, history-particualarly WWII and Vietnam, health sciences, weather, OK geeky stuffffffffffffffffff And don't forget sports

Anyone seen the movie "Hero" (1992)? Stars Dustin Hoffman, Gena Davis and Andy Garcia.
I saw this movie before I was diagnosed (ADHD) and didn't think much about it. I recently watched it again and saw Dustin Hoffman's character in a much different light. He seems (to me) more like someone who may be adult ADHD and had slipped through all the cracks in life...totally looked at by everyone as a "looser" or classic near-do-well...but turns out to be very heroic, selfless, and proactive when presented with a crisis situation. Then he immediately reverts back to his old behavior and personality once the crisis ends. Check it out.
Cheers!
* * * * * * Dustin Hoffman is Bernie, a selfish nasty guy who barely shows up at his ex-wife's to spend time with his kid. One night as he is driving to her house to fulfill his parental duty, he sees a downed plane in a field. Irritated but grudgingly acknowledging he should do the right thing, he pries open the door to free the passengers. He goes in and finds the unconscious Gale (Davis), who is a newscaster back from an awards show. Seeing everyone to safety, Bernie hails a cab and continues on his way.
Gale goes on TV looking for her hero. The cabdriver to whom Bernie told his tale then takes credit. He is handsome, seems nice and apparently saved an entire airplane full of people -- a media dream! Bernie sees all this on TV and gets aggravated to no end. But no one believes him that he did such a heroic deed.
The farce continues till it is indeed discovered, through a convoluted turn of events, who the real hero is. Mostly, thouh, Bernie wants to prove to his son that he can do a good thing every now and then, even if people won't believe you. As he philosophizes, the world is just layers of "sh-t". You peel through the layers till you find "sh-t" you can live with, and then that's your "sh-t"!!!

Ooh, interesting. I'll have to watch that. Oh yah, Happy Gilmore, just doing things his own way. I absolutely love hearing about fictional characters (movies and books) that portray adhd types. I literally just about bawled when I saw Haiku Tunnel. I would have sworn that movie was written about me, except that the movie is about a guy, not a woman. At one point his boss says to him "Settle Down. Focus. Catch up." Here's the website: www.sonyclassics.com/haiku/assets/html/frameset/synoframeset.html Pretty interesting.

Have any of you heard or read the kids series "Junie B. Jones" by Barbara Park. ADHD-heavy on the H. My DD has almost all of those books, but I swear Junie B. is ADHD.
We also went to see her bus tour at our local book store this week, and it just proved it!

Yah, and how about Amelia Bedilia? She sorta qualifies.
I'll have to check out Junie B. Yes, Dennis the Menace definitely seems ADHD.

The librarian had a waiting list for the Junie B. Jones books for just the 3rd grade. They love those books. And Amelia Bedilia too, my kids aren't too into Dennis the menace, probably because they are just like him

I'd like to see highly ADHD adult character on television regularly, in a drama, not a comedy ...

What about the CSI type shows? I don't watch them regularly, or NYPD Blue? That irish guy seems kinda add, or is that just me thinking it. He's more compulsive or something, right? Now I'm gonna go skim the TV guide

If you haven't watched "Phenomenon" ever or for a while, watch it and see if you can relate to the way he absorbs everything around him. I know we can't move things with our minds, but there are some strange ways it seems as you become a part of things around you. It always seemed like I could see how students think but not what they were exactly thinking.
